During the last three years, the government has put forth efforts to expand winter tourism beyond the well-known skiing location of Gulmarg in North Kashmir. The emphasis has been on promoting tourism in snow-bound areas that are still inaccessible, owing to road closures.

It has been proposed to to make helicopter service available at blocked-off places because of the snow, hoping that these locations might become winter tourism hotspots. These days when people are on a quest to look for lesser explored places at a touristy place, this idea is very likely to work.

Sonamarg, Karnah, and Gurez will be accessible to tourists during the winter months for the first time in 70 years. To attract visitors, the government intends to add adventure sports and other activities in these locations. It would lead to more employment opportunities and boost the economy of the valley.
