When I did my first sky dive, I thought nothing could be more adventurous than this but then, I bunjee jumped ☺!
I remember having a casual discussion with my brother about his bunjee jump at South Africa and while we were talking, all I could think in my head was what’s like jumping off the tallest bridge in the world? There was only one way to find out. How? By jumping off the bridge by myself!
My story
Bloukrans Bungy is recognized as the world’s highest “commercial bridge” bunjee jump, at 216 meters (709 feet) free fall above Bloukrans River. I booked myself for a bunjee jump with Face Adrenalin. Bloukrans bridge is highest in Africa and bungee jump from "this bridge" ranks highest in the world. It is situated on N2 highway at the Border between Eastern cape and the Western Cape in the Tsitsikamma area of South Africa's beautiful Garden Route
To reach the jump point, one has to walk across the arch span bridge. We were advised to not to look down while we are on the walkway bridge and I so am glad I obeyed!
The moment I reached the jump point, I was told that I would be the “first” to jump off amongst the group of people. My anxiety level just shot up! To be honest, I wanted to ask him if I could go back! But then, I thought if I do not jump now, I would never be able to do it
The best thing about this place is that the team at Face Adrenalin keeps your spirits high from the time you reach there. They welcome you with broad smiles and lots of positive energies! The loud music that plays in the background while you wait for your turn, definitely make you tap your boots.
What next? My name was shouted. I was secured with full body harness with ankle connection and the team member tied Velcro around my legs. I then moved to the next seat wherein the team member tied my both legs together.
Thereafter, I stood out on the edge of the bridge! At that moment, I asked myself why am I doing this? But now there was no turning back. The adrenaline in my vein had started flowing.
Before I could realise, it was the time for that vital leap of faith! The team members screamed “5..4..3..2..1… Bunjee!!” and I were pushed off the bridge!
Earlier, I assumed that I am not among those who scream during the fall, but hell no! I think I must have screamed the loudest and for all you know, may be my scream would have reached the infinite!
I felt I was flying and all this felt surreal. My body hurled with such a speed towards the ground. The rope stopped the fall just short of the ground and gave the ultimate thrill. Bloukran bunjee uses pendulum bunjee technology so when I jumped, the cord attached pulled me out of free-fall into a smooth pendulum.
Upon hitting the bottom, you grasp the amazing view of mountain and river. An unexpected calmness keyed into my body while I was hanging upside down. At that moment, I spread my hands out and let go of everything without thinking too much. This was the best feeling on Earth.
While I was still enjoying the scenic beauty, my “rescuer” came to buckle me up and take me back to the top.
So how does one feel post bunjee jumping adventure?
After my jump, I felt a remarkable sense of accomplishment. Returning back from the same "walkway Bridge" felt like a piece of cakewalk. The confidence that I gained was at a different level altogether and guess what? I “looked down” while walking on the bridge and I wasn’t scared this time!
Post your jump, I would recommend you to visit “The Cliffhanger” Pub, adjacent to Bloukrans bridge to tantalize your taste buds. You get to sit, relax and watch live feed of bunjee jumps of other enthusiasts, which are played on the big screen. You basically re-live your bunjee jump while sipping coffee or drinking beer!
I must admit that this is the most terrifying experience but I haven’t met a single person who has done bunjee jump and not loved it!
So, do you also fancy a rush, you will never forget? Let us see some of the highest jumps in the world.
