Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is one of Bangkok's well-known attractions. The temple complex, a restoration of an old one originally built on the site, is one of the oldest and largest in Thailand, covering an area of about 80,000 square meters, having been built in 1788. The complex is composed of a monastery where monks reside, a school, several shrines, and 91 stupas, mounds that contain Buddhist relics. The smaller ones contain the ashes of the Royal family, while the large ones contain the ashes of Buddha. There is also a cloister that contain a large number of images of Buddha. The main centerpiece of the temple, of course, is the Reclining Buddha. The statue is 43 meters long and 15 meters high. The feet - four and a half meters long - are inlaid with mother of pearl and decorated with symbols.Along the hall where the statue is are 108 bronze bowls, representing the auspicious characters of the Buddha. People drop coins on the bowls to bring good luck. Also in the complex is a school for massages. It is said that the temple was the birthplace of the traditional Thai massage.
Thailand is a cosmopolitan cocktail of tropical islands, sacred temples and ancient ruins. In the heart of the country lies Bangkok, which is a must-visit for its temples, palaces, markets and for one of the most legendary nightlife cultures in the world. Among the plethora of places to visit, make sure you stop by the Grand Palace in Bangkok which houses the current monarch of the kingdom. Most travellers will also wind up in the old city of Chiang Mai, the second largest city of Thailand. 10 miles out of this city lies the golden temples of Wat Doi Suthep at the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park; a popular way of getting here is on rental scooter. As an alternative to Chiang Mai, visit the province of Isaan for a taste of authentic Thai culture and way of living. Koh Samet, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui and many, many islands are dotted off both coastlines of the Thai peninsula, offering enchanting underwater vistas of snappers, rays, and turtles. Another major attraction are Thailand’s whimsical floating markets of which the Damnoen Saduak, in Ratchaburi (Bangkok) is the most popular with tourists. And as most people travelling to Thailand do, gorge on the lemongrass and coconut favouring cuisine and make sure you stock up on some fresh local ingredients before you leave. Thailand tourism has flourished in the last decade as a huge number of travellers want to explore the interiors.
Like all urban rivers, the history of the Chao Phraya is intertwined with the city it flows through. The original site was chosen by early settlers because of its fertility and abundant fish. Later King Taksin, after the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese, located his new capital here, on the western banks today known as Thonburi. you can even avail the cruise dinner facility here to have the bliss experience
Warm Sawasdeeka and a melodious singing accent of every local here amused us. The city of Bangkok has something exciting for everyone. The beautiful awestruck buildings in the Grand Palace premises and the jaw dropping beauty of the temple complexes like the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun (temple of the dawn), Wat Pho (Temple of the reclining Buddha – the famous Samadhi posture of Lord Gautama Buddha) and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple that houses the largest Golden Buddha Statue till date) are a must visit for the curious first timers. Since our stay in Bangkok was short we explored the city’s tourist attractions by the hop-on hop-off boat ride through the river Chao Phraya. The river on both its edges are lined by massive multi-storied buildings, shopping malls and historic buildings in amazing designs each displaying the unique architectural skills of the city. It’s worth marveling the skyline of Bangkok for the giant skyscrapers densely lined up once the city is lit at dusk .
