Transportation in Thailand is varied and offers ample amount of options depending on your patience and convenience you can select the one which suits you the best. Some of the most important means of transportation and their crisp details are listed below.
1. Meter Taxi
One of the best options you can go for with meter prices. The basic fare for these taxis starts with 35 THB for first two kilometers. And then go on increasing with 2 baht at a time (roughly per kilometer). A surcharge applies in traffic jams (1.25 baht per meter when moving under 6 km per hour). Typical taxi fares for going a few kilometers are around 50 baht.
Communication can be a problem with the majority of Thailand's drivers, so make sure you have your address written in the Thai language with you otherwise at least keep google translate application handy.
These taxis come in funky colors including orange, yellow, blue, pink. Regardless of the colors fares remain same. Whatever may be the color fare does not change.
However, of course, there are some drivers you will find who does not really wish to go by meter but by their own prices, you really need to be good at bargaining in such cases and should have a rough idea of an ideal fare for your destination from your current location.
2. Song Teaw
Song Teaw is a local name for a taxi which is a small truck with two rows of the bench for sitting famous mainly in the city of Pattaya.
One song teaw can carry around 12 people sitting and some adventurous locals and tourists also prefer standing once it is full.
No fixed fare for this taxi and it comes in two options at times- Flexible fare to some destination for the whole song teaw or you can go for sharing option which can cost you as minimum as 10THB for certain distances.
When you are in Thailand, this is a must try option.
3. Tuk Tuk
A three-wheeled motorcycle which has become a symbol of Thailand found in large numbers in the capital city Bangkok.
If you re looking for a fun and an adventures ride through the streets of Thailand, go for this option.
But Be aware of the fare to your destination so that you are not conned by anyone for your money because of the inflated rates.
3 People can sit in 1 tuk-tuk at a time. And as you can see it in the picture, it's an open vehicle. So if you are not interested in getting sweaty in the hot weather of Thailand; a thought of skipping tuk-tuk is always better.
Compared to taxis it is relatively cheaper and quicker option since the well-known driver can actually bring you to your destination through small internal roads (if available for your destination) avoiding the heavy traffic jams on the main road.
4. Motorcycle Taxi
If you are a solo traveler with not much luggage when you are going for your sightseeing, motorbike taxi is the best option you can go with.
How to recognize whether the motorbike a taxi or not? Simple! The drivers wear a designated jacket mostly in orange, fluorescent green or pink color etc.
Again no fixed fare for this option and you have to be excellent on your bargaining skills.
Motorbike taxis can be found near street intersections or small allies for your trip.
5. Water Taxi
Thailand has two long coastlines – the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast islands. Also, there are many rivers and canals in Thailand including in Bangkok which once was called ‘the Venice of the East’.
The long-tail boats are the main transport on rivers and canals in Bangkok and neighboring provinces.
Visitors who are willing to take a sneak peek into the local lives can opt for these options=. However, finding these boat station in any city can be a tedious task sometimes.
This type of transportation is mainly famous in the capital city Bangkok.
6. Bus
Buses in Bangkok gives you wonderful option of traveling cheap from one side of the city to the other.
These buses run from 5 in the morning till 11 in the night.
Mainly seen in Bangkok, providing two options- Air Conditioned and Non-Air Conditioned.
Again the Non-Air Conditioned ones are divided into two types- Paid trip and a free trip.
Most of the bus's final destination is written in Thai, so the best way of finding out about the bus route and destination is by the bus number.
If you are in doubt about the same, just ask the local or a policeman so that you don't board the wrong bus.
Fares can start at 7THB for Non-Air conditioned buses and can vary according to your destination in Non-Air conditioned buses.
7. Sky Train
When I am talking about sky train, I am talking about the BTS i.e. Bangkok Transit System.
A huge network and fastest way of going from one place to the other in the city.
Siam station is the junction of the transit system; offers trains from west to south and from north to east; differentiating into two lines as Silom Line and Sukhumvit Line respectively.
The minimum sky train tickets cost you 15THB for 1 stop and can be bought at the station directly through the vending machines. (You need to have your coins handy for this)
If you are not willing to get into the hassle for the tickets, you can also opt for the BTS One Day Pass which allows you unlimited travel for 120THB for the duration of the single day.
Sky Train starts at 6.30 in the morning and runs until midnight. Be careful of the timing at which you are boarding the train since it can be really full during peak hours.
