Amidst the peaceful town of Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu lies a sacred temple of Nagaraja – the King of Serpents. The place probably got its name ‘Nagercoil’ because of the presence of this temple of Snake God.

The legend behind the temple says that it was built by one of the devotees of Lord Shiva, Namboothiri, who also worshipped Nagaraja and Nagayakshi.

The temple is also claimed to be a Jain temple considering the images the temple has on its pillars.

One of the local legends also talks about a girl who while cutting the paddy cut herself and saw a five-headed serpent at that place.

Although the history is still unclear and debatable, the temple certainly holds prominence in India because of its rich culture and holiness.

The Nagaraja Temple houses many idols of snake gods apart from the idols of Shiva and Vishnu.
