Rameshwaram- The Pious Land

Tripoto
Day 2

Rameshwaram is one of the Char dham pilgrimage and is the closest point to reach Sri Lanka. This is the place where Rama Sethu bridge was built across the sea to Lanka by Aydhoya King Rama with the help of his devotees (Vanar Sena) to rescue Mata Sita.

How to reach
The town is well connected with local buses or one can reach there by their own vehicle, on rent are easily available. Well I travelled by train from Madurai to Rameshwaram in the end dates of September month. It’s 6 am in the morning and there was a local train for Rameshwaram. It takes 2hours to reach.

The train journey was so interested as it’s a local train & local people who only speaks Telugu and I interact with my co passengers, we unfold our conversation by seeing the expressions of each other.

Stay & Rentals-
You’ll find hotels near the railway station or nearby Temple at ₹1000-1200per night (Charges may vary if you visit on any festive season or most peak season).

Best time to visit
You can travel any season but avoid festive season but for the pleasant weather I recommend October to March is the best time to visit and this considers as peak season.

Major attractions:

Pamban Bridge

Ramanathaswamy Temple

Lamkshmna Teertha

Hanuman Teertha

Villoondi Teertham

Sakshi Hanuman Temple

Abdul Kalam House

Kalam Memorial

Pamban Bridge
On your way, you experience the only longest bridge in India of length 2.3 km. You can see some sections of Old bridge submerged in the water.

I reached Rameshwaram railway station. You can take taxi or auto just after 10 min of walk from railway station.

I planned my trip in a manner so that I can returned on the same day. But never plan for more than 2 days, One for temples & holy places and second for Dhanushkodi.

Ramanathaswamy Temple
The temple is one of the twelve Jyotilinga temple. The temple has the longest corridor with sandstone pillar.

Entry to the temple is divided in two sections one is official another is unofficial. Unofficially you need to pay 100-200 for direct darshan, else stand for hours in queue and wait for your turn.

Also, there are four entry gates (East, West, North and South) so remember you need to enter from East gate and remove your shoes outside the gate.

Few steps ahead you saw some unofficial prashad distributors so be aware from those people.

You can visit all the temples in a day all are nearby.

Abdul Kalam House
The house of Ex-President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Now this is also included in a tourist attraction point. The building is modified and well maintained. But photography is not allowed inside the building, you can go inside and know more about his life.

Further our journey continued towards Dhanushkodi. But will share experience in next blog. So, Stay tuned for more places and adventure.

Tip—Be aware of unofficial people who charge you extra money for Pooja procedure.
