Day 1

Living most of my life in South India and travelling to far many places in and around India, it is pity that I have never visit the famous Ooty. But not until 6th April 2019. This salient hill station did not come to prominence until 18th century. The British has taken notice of this place and enthralled by its beauty started becoming as a summer place. It also briefly served as summer capital of Madras Presidency. When we speak of Ooty it includes places like Wellington and Coonoor as well.

Places to Visit

Though our actual visit to visit was to participate in 2nd edition of Ooty Ultra Marathon we did board a day tour vehicle which takes us through Ooty, Wellington and Coonoor. We had opted for this package and there are many other options available.

Wellington Cantonment

A small beautiful town in Nilgiris known for its settlement of armed forces. It is famous for Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), one of the very few or probably the only one in the country. It imparts training to mid-level officers of Indian Armed Forces and also few friendly foreign countries. The town looks clean and organized just like any other cantonment.

We were lucky as well to see Mr. A Raja (known for 2G spectrum scam), a DMK candidate fighting from Nilgiri constituency for upcoming General Elections, campaigning for his party. He was very animated in his speeches and is trying to capture people’s psyche towards DMK. We should thank our stars to be able to see him.

Singara Tea Estate

Coonoor is known for tea plantations and chocolate factories. One of the the many tea estates is Singara tea estate. Our driver took us there where we had a small introduction on how tea plantations are grown and how tea is made out of them. Singara tea estate is owned by Mayur Madhvani, husband of Hindi film actor Mumtaz.

We were also taken to a small chocolate factory and eucalyptus oil extraction unit. We did some shopping there as well.

Catherine Falls and Dolphin’s Nose

Our driver took us to this beautiful falls perched in midst of the hills far away from where we are standing at Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint. They are apparently called Catherine Falls.

Dolphin’s Nose is a tip of the peak resembling dolphin’s nose formed by spectacular rock structures. You need to see this viewpoint through a telescope stationed there to appreciate the nose of a dolphin.
