Dhanushkodi- The Ghost Town

Tripoto
Day 3

Hey Travellers!!!

Hope you loved to know about Rameshwaram tour guide. Let’s continued our journey towards Dhanushkodi. The place has its own devastating journey of cyclone in 1964 that ruins the beauty of the village as well as the people who lived there, 7m high tides killed 100 of passengers who travelled in train, that’s why the place is also known as Ghost town.

The small village had the best connectivity with the town, had their own schools, church, market, fisheries but now the village turned into barren of sand & also this is the closest point on the Indian coast to Sri Lanka.

Our Puran says Lord Rama Built a bridge using floating stones. After coming back, the new king of Lanka Vibhishana, asked Rama to destroy the bridge. From there the place is known as Dhanushkodi as Dhanush means bow and Kodi means end.

How to reach
You can hire a taxi or an auto, I enjoyed my trip in auto from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi its only 18Km of distance from Rameshwaram. Carry your own eatables, bottled water because the prices of snacks are high there & never forget your scarfs as sometimes it can be extremely windy and also you are not allowed to visit the place after sunset.

Visiting Places
Dhanushkodi Beach
Kothandarama Temple
Ram Setu viewpoint
Old Church

Dhanushkodi Beach
Moving towards my journey, reached at the last point of the Dhanushkodi, i.e. Dhanushkodi beach. The beach is far away from crowd and its view is just WOW!!!

Kothandarama Temple
The temple is in between the journey of your Dhanushkodi, the last point. According to Myths, Vibhishana surrender himself to Rama and sought refuge. Outside the temple you’ll get some local shops of snacks.

If you are an anglerfish then the place is for you, there are numerous shacks on roadside who serves you a fresh fish.

Ram Setu Viewpoint
Moving ahead to Ram Setu point where the bridge had been built by Rama and Vanara sena. The place is calm with some hermit’s shebang.

Old Church
Some ruined building of Church, schools are there. You can enjoy or even buy some seashell items from the local market as people who are still living there open some shops for their alimony.

You can visit all these places in half a day.

Tip — Try to visit all the places before sunset.
