During my stay at Madurai, I realized that the people cannot live here without parathas. You can survive at Madurai with less than Rs. 100/- a day with the help of these Parathas! Veg set Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Madurai
Cost: Rs. 100/- per plate.
This is the veg counterpart of chilli set paratha. It does not have egg. To make it spicier, people add black pepper to it.
Coconut wheat paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Theni- Madurai Byepass Road
Cost: Rs. 40/- per plate.
This is the veg counterpart of chilli set paratha. It does not have egg. Since, this is made by few Malayalis residing here, they mash wheat parathas and add coconut gratings to this. To make it spicier, people add chilli powder to it.
Bun Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of K.K. Nagar, Madurai
Cost: Rs. 15/- per piece.
As the name suggests, this paratha looks like a bun when served. Just like a bun, it is buffed up and it is so tasty to eat!
Pepper Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Palanganatham Bye pass Road, Madurai
Cost: Rs. 40/- per plate.
As the name suggests, this paratha is mixed with black pepper, soya sauce, red chilli powder, and deep fried before serving. This is super spicy and you will definitely shed tears.
Veg Ceylon Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Palanganatham Bye pass Road, Madurai
Cost: Rs. 20/- per piece.
Tracing the origin, this parathas were served as a signature dish at Southern parts of Tamil Nadu by the Sri Lankan Refugees who migrated to Tamil Nadu. Hence, the name Ceylon Paratha. It is actually a vegetarian dish but later devolved into many non-veg counterparts. Initially this was a combination of parathas stuffed with vegetables. However, the present form of Ceylon paratha is a plain paratha stuffed with onions.
Egg Ceylon Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Madurai
Cost: Rs. 40/- per piece.
This is the present form of Ceylon paratha at Madurai. As Madurai is predominantly filled with non-veg people, this has taken birth. This is a paratha stuffed with mashed egg.
Chicken Ceylon Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Madurai
Cost: Rs. 70/- per piece.
This is a paratha stuffed with mashed egg and boneless chicken.
Mutton Ceylon Paratha:
Where to get: Every corner of Madurai
Cost: Rs. 100/- per piece.
This is a paratha stuffed with mashed egg and mutton chops. Black pepper and green chilli are often used to make it spicy.
