The Trummelbach Falls are the world’s only glacier waterfalls that are inside the mountain and accessible from inside by a lift. There are viewing platforms, galleries, tunnels, paths and all the walkways are secured by railing. These falls drain the melting water of glaciers from the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch glaciers down to the valley up to 20,000 liters of water per second. There are total 10 waterfalls and all 10 falls are not completely contained inside the mountain. The Trummelbach Falls are the Europe’s largest subterranean waterfalls and they are part of the Lauterbrunnen Valley’s 72 waterfalls.
There is a lift inside the mountain which will take you up in the mountain between the 6th and 7th waterfall. From there, you can either go up in the tunnel to see the remaining falls or come down watching fall number 5 to 1.
From here you will get a very nice view of Lauterbrunnen Valley. We went up, went inside the tunnel walkway up to the dead-end near the 10th waterfall. Along the way, we saw waterfall 7 through 10.
Waterfall 6 was probably the most photographed one. You can see the slot canyon carved out because of the sheer volume of water which pour down from these impressive waterfalls and it continues to carve the twisted walls it pounds down.
This is the place where power of the nature is to be seen, heard and felt. This was the most, amazing and unique waterfall experiences we had so far. lt’s quite challenging to get decent photos inside due to water spray and darkness.
lf you want to return to Lauterbrunnen or continue to Stechelberg by post bus do check departure times before visiting the water falls (time table right at the bus stop) so you know how much time you can spend at the falls and you don’t have to wait for long time after returning. There’s a restaurant at the bus station right outside the entrance and next to restaurant there is parking space.
Tips;
* It’s damp and can get quite cool in the caves, even in summer. Bring a jacket or raincoat.
* Wear hiking shoes or any footwear without slippery soles.
* Trummelbach falls is not wheelchair /strolly accessible.
* No credit cards accepted at ticket counter
*Visiting Trummelbach falls is not covered under Swiss Pass.
* Due to high noise toddlers are not allowed inside the falls.
