Overview

Visited by Buddhist pilgrims from around the nation, Kalutara Bodhiya is regarded as one of the 32 saplings of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree that was brought to Srilanka by monk Sangamitta. The tree is surrounded by the monastery and a stupa which is devotees visit to pay homage to Lord buddha

Historical evidence state that the fig tree in Kalutara was planted by a Pandyan Prince named Wickrama Pandya during 1042 AD although pilgrims had started visiting the site soon after the sapling became a tree, the monastery along with the stupa was built centuries later.

Getting there

The Kalutara Bodhiya is located in Kalutara, the western province of Sri Lanka, it is situated right next to the Galle to Colombo road and at proximity to the Kalu River. Since Kalutara is a popular tourist destination a number of hotels In Kalutara are also located close to the site.

Things to remember

Since this is a religious site visitors will have to dress modestly covering their shoulders and knees. Footwear cannot be worn inside the premises and you need permission to take photographs. Also, make sure that you explore the site without disturbing the devotees.
