Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination where you can spend an absolutely incredible holiday. Here are some things that you didn’t know about this pearl of the Indian Ocean.
Sri Lanka boasts one of the highest literacy rates in Asia
As per UNESCO statistics, this small South Asian island nation has an adult literacy rate of 91.9 per cent. The country is also ranked 6th in the literacy rate of their youth at 98.86 per cent. With these high literacy rates, it is no wonder that famous physicists such as Dr Sarath Gunapala (working in NASA) are held in high esteem across the world.
A hotel is not always a hotel in Sri Lanka
Although you will come across some of the best hotels Sri Lanka has to offer during your holiday in the country, all establishments that are labelled “hotels” do not live up to that name. For the most part, these will be restaurants minus accommodation. But these do have incredibly delicious local food!
Stray dogs are a common sight
When you travel around Sri Lanka, it is not uncommon to have a friendly dog tag along with you out of nowhere. Whether you’re watching the sunset at a rural beach or hiking to the top of Ella Rock, you will find one of these furry friends keeping you company. And no – they wouldn’t bite unless you pose an unnecessary risk to them.
Sri Lanka was once ruled by kings
Although Sri Lanka is known as a semi-presidential democratic republic nowadays, years ago, it was ruled under kings who were skilled at many aspects of life. These included mastery in ancient forms of martial arts like angampora and even unbelievable knowledge on ancient urban planning that one can even see today at places like Sigiriya Rock.
