Sri Lanka is undeniably beautiful. The architecture, the nature and the ocean just swept me away. Here are a few things you might want to add onto your list.
Dutch fort, Galle.
Built in 1588 this fort is situated on a sea shore. Old dutch buildings which have now been converted into cafes and cute shops will just steal your heart away. Walking along those narrow streets after the sunset just makes your day better. Some of the restaurants have the best Sri Lankan food. Make sure you stay hydrated as it can get quite humid over here.
Take a train ride from Colombo to Ella
This train journey has been one of my best train experiences. Journey starts early in the morning from Colombo and you reach Ella in the evening. You come across endless number of tea plantations, waterfalls, forests and mountains. Tickets have to be taken a month in advance, you can contact any local travel agencies from Sri Lanka.
Drive to Ambewala farms(New Zealand farms) and horton plains national park
Ambewala farms is in Nuwara eliya, start your day early in the morning and drive to Ambewala farms. Lush green grasslands welcome you with fresh air. A little ahead of this farm is Horton plains national park, one of the most beautiful and scenic hikes in Sri Lanka.
Take a train to Mount lavinia
Take a local train from Colombo to Mount lavinia which runs along the coastal lines. Mount Lavinia has a beautiful beach and really cute shacks where you can chill with a tender coconut and adore the setting sun.
Boat ride in the mangrove forests of Madu river
The boat journey starts with a ride through the canals and numerous mangrove islands. They make a pit stop at cinnamon island where they show you the making of cinnamon. You can take some back for your loved ones as well. They take you around small islands covered with lush green trees and birds in their happiest times. It is a must visit if you are near Hikkaduwa.
