Girona Cathedral, better known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona is a beautiful Roman Catholic Church located in Girona, Catalonia. It is the main seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Girona. Tourists visiting Girona can take a walk in the famous Girona Square or visit the Church of Santa Maria de Gracia. The Cathedral was destroyed in the World War II and rebuilding it was given high priority by the Second Vatican Council in 1963.
You will be able to see the relieved bones of St. Nicholas which are relics from the Holy Place. There are many who visit Girona Cathedral during their stay in Spain. Some of them bring presents for the Immaculate Conception. They usually make a donation in the name of the baby. Other visitors visit the Caupols de Lluc, where they can see the tomb of St. Brighid.
The medieval town has been the venue of some incredible battles. The most famous battle that took place in Girona was the sack of the castle of San Juan de Dios in 1494 by the Moors. This town had an important role in the invasion of Portugal in the sixteenth century. When the Moors were driven out, the citizens of Girona made a church and a fortress in the city. The Black Death epidemic of course has brought many memories for those who have visited the town. Hundreds of skeletons have been discovered in many mass grave sites in Girona during excavations.
The Girona Cathedral is open every day and has become a popular attraction for tourists. It offers an opportunity to view the miracle of the incarnations of Jesus Christ. It is considered the largest Gothic Cathedral in Europe and is visible from the nearby streets. A tramway takes visitors inside and has a panoramic view of the city.
This impressive church is constructed from marble and glass. It was destroyed during World War II but painstakingly restored and re-designed by eminent architect Antoni Gaudi. The nave and the middle section are made of marble, while the transepto (the end facing Main Street) is made of glass.
In addition to being home to the largest Gothic Cathedral in Spain, Girona also has other attractions such as the Girona Museums. It has a wonderful selection of modern and contemporary artworks and home items. There are also a wide range of theatre productions and cultural events to keep the visitors entertained. During the day there are lots of things to do including walking and cycling around the beautiful streets. If you like shopping then you can also visit the famous San Martin Street.
After seeing the cathedral of Girona in Game of Thrones, many people want to see it live. A guided tour of the historic quarter of Girona can be booked on the excurzilla or foxiepass website, and in order not to waste a minute on the trip, I used the car rental service on the bookingauto website.
