A Guide to Calas de Conil - Cadiz's Secret

Calas de Conil are one of the most important areas near the famous town of Cadiz. Conil de la Frontera is a coastal area with big cliffs and pristine beaches located in the northern part of the town on the Atlantic coast. 

This territory extends up from the called Fuente del Gallo beach to the famous Roche housing development, where you will find some of the best sandy areas on the Costa de la Luz. It is an area of high ecological value with a high degree of conservation despite the tourist pressure. Although accessing the beaches isn't easy it is certainly worth it and even in the middle of the summer, it is a good place to relax and escape the bustle of the popular holidays areas.

The entire area is divided into two zones: Calas de Poniente and Calas de Levante, which are the closer coves to Conil.

Must see sights:

Faro de Roche: It dominates the area and marks the beginning of Calas de Poniente. It is located near to the mouth of the Roche river at the Atlantic.

Raíces Conileñas Museum: 4 rooms where you can discover the essence and history of this Andalusian town through almost a thousand diverse objects: farming tools, fishing tools, traditional furniture, prints, regional minerals and more. Closed on Mondays.

Torre de Guzmán: This Gothic tower stands over the big Santa Catalina square, at the centre of Conil. Its name comes from Guzmán el Bueno, who was said to have ordered the construction of the building.

Cala del Pato: One of the most beautiful areas of Conil de la Frontera: almost pristine, protected from the wind, surrounded by untouched nature and fine sand. It is found in the area called Calas de Poniente or Calas de Roche.

Cala Tío Juan de Medina: An excellent nude beach in Calas de Conil. It is very close to the Roche lighthouse, and is one of the best beaches fine sand and clear waters. To access it, it is necessary to go down the stairs to the right of the cliff.

Cala Encendida: It is one of the most visited coves, as well as El Aspero beach, also located in the Poniente area, next to the housing development and Roche cliff.

Places to Eat:

Timón de Roche Restaurant: located next to the beach. It has an open-air car park and is famous for its fried fish and sunsets. This restaurant is reasonably priced.

Chiringuito Cala del Aceite: Typical beach kiosk where you can enjoy some beers and fried fish, set main courses and some tapas. Average price.

La Almazara Resto-Bar: Creative cuisine with a speciality in tuna and traditional dishes with an innovative touch. Located in the centre of Conil. Mid to high price range..

Nightlife and Drinks:

Café La Habana: Youthful atmosphere and music. During the day it is a charming cafe ideal for a drink.

La luna: The most famous club in Conil. Located in the old quarter of town. Take care with your dress code as they do not allow entry with sports shoes.

La Tertulia: Great atmosphere. Enjoy a drink in the open air in the pretty courtyard.
