My Ostrich Farm visit : Highgate South Africa
When in South Africa visiting Ostrich farm is a a great fun and interesting activity. There are lot of farms in Oudtshoorn area which hosts day tours on ostrich farming, ostrich races and much more. These can be equally enjoyed by kids and adults.
I visited one of the most oldest ostrich show farm in Oudtshoorn which is Highgate. It is not just show farm but a working farm too.
THINGS YOU SEE/DO
HOW TO BOOK
It's an intensive 75 minutes tour wherein you learn about modern breeding methods of Ostrichs that produce around 15000 ostrich chicks a year. You are face to face with Ostrich where you feed them. You are taken to incubators and explained how they work. You get a chance to hold an cuddle baby ostriches. You visit the feather room where vibrant colour feathers are made for dresses, head gears for carnivals and also for brooms. You can enjoy a donkey cart ride. You also get a chance to witness the Ostrich race in the picturesque race course which is also longest in the region. The highlight of the trip for me however was when the spectators are given the chance to ride on the ostrich. Yes ! you heard it right. You can ride an ostrich if your weight is less than 55 kgs. It is till date of the best experiences of my life. You can buy genuine south African made products from the gift shop which uses the farm resources. I bought a dusting broom made of ostrich feathers and it's the best. You can conclude the trip by treating yourself at The Pepper Tree Restaurant which also serves traditional ostrich meal. Since I am a vegetarian I did not eat anything here but I did enjoy the beautiful views of the Klein Karoo Valley and the picturesque Swartberg mountains.TIME
