Kargil is a 5 hours drive from Srinagar and 5 hours drive from Leh City. It is equidistant from both places.
I left Srinagar at 9 in the morning. After a hault at Sonamarg, I left for Kargil. On the way I crossed the mighty Zojila, which is equally both dangerous and beautiful. The high mountain terrain with snow walls on both side of the puddled road, like an open snow tunnel, snow all over the mountain top, it then leads to Zero point. Kargil starts from there.
Almost 3 in the afternoon, I reached Kargil.
The last village of Kargil on the Zojila side is Matayen. A very less populated place but beautifully sorrounded by snow capped mountains. Then followed by the next village, Pandrass. Stone houses in between green lushes and snow mountains. You would want to spend a few times here hiking into the mountains. Small water streams flowing from the mountains are as beautiful as a dream. After this village comes the World's second coldest place, Drass. It is said that once the temperature dips to (minus) -60 degree. Thus coldest after Siberia. Have your lunch here. Rajma Chawal is the best you can have here. Try Noon Chai (Salt Tea) after the meal.
Drass Valley is also famously known for the Kargil War of 1999. The Tiger Hill and Tololing, where hundreds of Indian armies were martyred in the War. Today at the same place, there stands a War memorial (Vijay Path). It is located on the National Highway towards Kargil. One may pay their homage to the brave soldiers.
