Rome Tour Packages

Rome, Italy’s capital, is a cosmopolitan and one of the world’s most visited cities. With nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display, Rome has played a significant role in world history. Ruins of marvels such as the Forum and the Colosseum are reminiscent of the once powerful Roman Empire. Beyond a rich history, Rome also offers exquisite shopping experiences, unique city tours and a world-class cuisine for foodies. Vatican City, a stellar neighbour, is a must-have on Rome tour packages. The headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which are home to paragons like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes make Vatican City a revered addition to the list.

Rome tour packages showcase the bygone era in all its glory. Fortunately, history buffs can cover most of the sights here within a stay of 2–3 days. Learning the way of life here and getting over the laid back vibes of Rome will take a lifetime, though.

Rome Highlights

Walking the streets of Rome is like visiting an open-air museum. The countless beautiful buildings here have been leaving travellers spellbound for ages. Rome tour packages ideally start with the Colosseum, the world’s biggest amphitheatre. Built between 72 and 80 AD, the Colosseum hosted gladiator fights and public spectacles. It can accommodate 80,000 visitors! Though presently in ruins due to the damage caused by earthquakes and stone robbers, this marvellous piece of architecture still belongs to the New 7 World Wonders of the World.

One of the best-preserved buildings among ancient Roman buildings is the Pantheon. The date of construction is estimated to be somewhere around 126 AD. Built by the Roman emperor Hadrian, the Pantheon is a coffered dome with a central opening on top and a must-have on the Rome tour packages. It has served the purpose of a church since the 7th century and is the burial place for two Italian kings, Vittoria Emanuelle II, Umberto I, and Queen Margherita.

A must-visit spot on the Rome tour packages is Piazza di Spagna, one of the most famous squares in Rome. The name translates to ‘spanish stairs’. The structure comprises 135 steps, making it the most impressive set of stairs in Rome packages. Its construction dates back to the Baroque period, when it was sculpted by the Benini family. The Spanish Steps are accompanied by many garden terraces on different levels as well.

Trevi Fountain, one of the world’s most famous fountains is next in line to awestruck travellers out to explore the beauty of Rome. Rome honeymoon packages keep this high on the list of places to see here. It was constructed in 1732 and designed by the famous Italian architect Nicola Salvi. Locals believe that throwing a coin here with the right hand over the left shoulder brings good luck. Astonishingly, €3000 (more than Rs 2,50,000) is thrown in the fountain every day, making this a frequent addition on most Rome tour packages.

St. Peter's Basilica is another architectural marvel and the main basilica in Vatican City. Constructed in 1506, it is often cited as the greatest of all churches in Christendom. According to the Catholic tradition, this is the burial site of the first bishop of Rome, St. Peter, making it a stellar addition to the Rome tour packages. Today, it stands as a famous pilgrimage site and the place for the Pope to preside over several liturgies a year.

The Roman Forum is a popular addition to Rome tour packages for most archaeological enthusiasts. The place is a collection of ruins of various ancient government buildings. This was the centre of everyday routine in ancient Rome and is celebrated as the most famous meeting place in the world. Most structures here date back to the 8th century BC.

Rome isn’t all about dilapidated constructions of the past. Step into the newest building in town, Altare Della Patria (Vittoriano). Also known as Altar of the Fatherland, this was constructed in 1888 and built in honor of the first king of a unified Italy, Victor Emmanuel II. It is a sought-after place to have on your Rome tour packages.

Within the heart of Rome lies Vatican City, officially known as Vatican City State. Vatican City is recognised as an independent country within the city of Rome and is the smallest country in the world. The Pope rules the place, who also acts as the Bishop of Rome and leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. Vatican City is home to many historical artefacts and buildings apart from the world-famous Vatican Museums, which have around 20,000 stunning artworks on display. This is a must-have on the Rome tour packages for those seeking an insight into the homeland of Christianity.

Within the ancient grounds of Rome hides peacefully a funky, bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old, working-class roots. On the Rome tour packages, spend an evening at Trastevere. Known for traditional and innovative trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan shops, as well as simple B&Bs and budget hotels, Trastevere is a paradise for food lovers too.

City tours in Rome and Vatican City are the cherry on the cake when it comes to exploring the cities. Add one of these to the Rome tour packages and travel with a designated tour guide for an informative and insightful trip. People travelling in large groups or with family can choose more comfortable options like guided walking tours and hop-on-hop off tour buses, while more lavish options like private golf cart tours cater to the needs of luxury travellers.

Rome Reviews

Why I've chosen to visit these countries?
Italy (Rome)
Oh Rome! You're a wonder.
I can seriously go to Rome uncountable times if I get the chance. Although I didn't include Rome in my initial itineraries, because I just wanted to explore the Balkans Peninsula (Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia) as its still hasn't become that touristy and most importantly its incredibly beautiful. But when I was experimenting with all sorts of itineraries, nothing was working for me because flights were quite expensive for these countries from India. So I finally decided to fly to Rome to save some money and then fly to Dubrovnik from there. And I'm so glad that I did that because this city is going to steal your heart.
Rome is a beautiful mix of old and new. There is so much history, good food, coffee, architectural wonders, cheap wine and literally hundreds of places to visit that you'll be spoilt for choice.
Vatican
Vatican is the smallest country in the world yet it is grand. You'll be amazed by its richness of works of art by many worldwide famous artists. Its in the middle of Rome city and is worth a full day of sightseeing.
Roma is what the locals call this city. After coming from Naples, Rome at a glance feels like a museum with beautiful fountains everywhere and clean, bright buildings. The architecture in Rome screams of history, hence art & museum lovers will have a lot to explore here. But I would suggest everyone to explore the little streets which are further away from city center here because the popular monuments are super crowded & touristy and do not give the real essence of this city like instead of Trevi Fountain, visit the smaller fountains at Piazza Navona & Piazza del Popolo (very under-rated). The best part here is, there's clean tap water available everywhere and we didn't find it difficult to quench our thirst at any point during our day out in this city!
"I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble" – Augustus
As rightly once portrayed as “The Capital of the World”, Rome is a city packed with cultural heritage which dates almost 3000 years back…! A visit to Rome and you will realise that only a few cities in the world can rival its astonishing creative legacy.
Travelling to Rome soon? The stars are in your favour.
You will now be able to experience one of the most important Catholic relics. The Vatican has recently announced that it will open its holy stairs to the public for the first time in 300 years!
