Rishikesh is a place filled with everything for a short 2 day trip which can easily rejuvenate one from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Rishikesh has something to offer for every age group which makes it a perfect spot for family as well as friends' holiday.
The breathtaking Himalayas around the sacred city of Rishikesh, which is situated on the banks of the Ganga river. It is a well-liked location for thrill-seekers, yoga devotees, and spiritual seekers alike. Here are a few of the top activities that I did as well as found out from the locals which could enhance your experience in Rishikesh.
Rishikesh is known as the Yoga Capital of the world and having yoga sessions near the river Ganga can be the highlight of the trip because of the soothing wind that blows near the banks and the relaxation one witnesses after a session of Yoga.
Hotel/Ashram/Hostels?
In terms of hotels, ashrams, and hotels, Rishikesh has a lot to offer. Near Laxman Jhula, I discovered Sant Seva Ashram, which was the ideal location because it was situated right next to the river bank. At night, the view from the rooms was mesmerizing, and despite being on the main road, the ashram was very serene, and one could hear the water and feel the river's brisk breeze. To top it all off, the accommodations were reasonably priced, they offered yoga sessions, and the staff was an excellent resource for information about the area.
Day 1: Explore the spiritual side of Rishikesh
Start your day with a refreshing yoga session at one of the many ashrams in Rishikesh. Sant Seva Ashram also provides such sessions whereas other ashrams in the nearby vicinity would be Parmarth Niketan, Sivananda Ashram, and Swami Dayananda Ashram. You can also join a meditation class or a chanting session to calm your mind and connect with your inner self.
This area near Laxman Jhula is filled with a lot of cafes and restaurants for a good breakfast. I would suggest the Purple dhaba for its variety and good taste. One should also see Laxman Jhula which is now closed but is a suspension bridge and has a history which dates back to Ramayan. This is where Lakshman, the brother of Lord Rama, crossed the river using a jute rope.
Post Breakfast, If you are a fan of the Beatles, you might want to visit the Beatles Ashram in Rishikesh, India. This is where the famous rock band spent some time in 1968, learning meditation from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and composing songs for their White Album. The ashram is located on a cliff overlooking the Ganges river, surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife. It was abandoned in the 1990s and became a popular spot for graffiti artists and Beatles enthusiasts. In 2015, it was officially opened to the public as a tourist attraction and a museum. You can explore the various huts, meditation halls, art galleries and murals that tell the story of the Beatles' spiritual journey in India.
In the evening, One should witness the Ganga Aarti that takes place on various ghats but one of the the most famous ghats would be at Parmath Niketan. The aarti is very special and happens everyday at sunset and it hosts hundred of people offering prayers to Mother Ganga. The atmosphere around is mesmerising as it filled with music, chants, smiles and it would surely taking one on a spiritual ride.
You can end your day 1 with visiting Freedom cafe and enjoying a beautiful dinner while witnessing the beautiful ganga.
Day 2: Experience the adventure side of Rishikesh
Prepare yourself for some heart-pounding adventure on the Ganges river rapids after an early breakfast. One of the best locations in India for white water rafting is Rishikesh, which offers a variety of rapids with varying degrees of excitement. From 9 km to 36 km, and from 2 hours to 6 hours, you can select from a variety of itineraries. The Wall, Three Blind Mice, Golf Course, and Roller Coaster are a few of the well-known rapids. Along the journey, you will get the opportunity to see some wildlife and take in the picturesque grandeur of the river valley.
After rafting, you can engage in a variety of adventure sports in Rishikesh, including cliff jumping, rock climbing, rappelling, flying fox, and gigantic swing. There are numerous businesses and camps that provide these activities for affordable pricing. Before engaging in any of these activities, be sure you heed any safety warnings and directions.
You can unwind at your camp or resort or ashram in the evening and the enjoy the view of Ganga or visit some of Rishikesh's cafes and eateries. Indian, continental, and Chinese cuisines are just a few of the meals you may enjoy here. Little Buddha Cafe, Chotiwala Restaurant, Freedom Cafe, and Bistro Nirvana are a few of the well-known locations. Some of these locations also host cultural events and live music.
A two-day journey to Rishikesh will undoubtedly leave you feeling invigorated and renewed, as well as with lifelong memories. So prepare for an unforgettable adventure by packing your baggage.
There are a few more places to visit near Rishikesh which I would be covering the next time I visit.
