9 Amazing Things To Do In Udaipur, The City Of Lakes In 24 Hours!

Today it is quite easy to write a blog after reading content on Internet and sitting cosily in an A/C room, without even going to that place. Moreover, that is what lot of people have been doing recently, even the authors of some popular blogs/websites. However, I shall give you the glimpse of the places as I was there, not as a tourist but as a local. Because I have been there and lived there for a while :)

So let us start a day at Udaipur, and I shall take you through the beautiful city of lakes or Venice in East, as popularly known.

Start your day with a warm sunrise at Lake Fatehsagar; take a stroll or brisk walk along the lakeside. There are proper paved footpaths all around, go beyond them, along the road circumference the lake. Remember the night scene in Bollywood movie Yeh Jawani h Diwani, it was shot on this road. In fact, most of the movie shooting was in Udaipur, including the wedding venue Udai Vilas. You can have tea and Poha at the lakeside.

Timings: You can visit the roads around the lake any time of the day or night. To go to specific chattris around the lake, the timings are 10am to 5pm. There is speedboating available on Fatehsagar. Timings for the same are 8am to 4.30pm.

Entry fees: There is no entry fees to visit the lake. However, the prices for speedboating are ₹200 per person.

Other activities: There is also motorboat rides and simple boat rides on the lake. Motorboat rides cost ₹200 per person for adults and ₹100 per child (under 12 years). Boat rides cost ₹30 per person for Indians and ₹125 per person for foreigners.

In the late morning, (Around 10 am) get ready for the city ride and first visit the beautiful City palace. Take a guide to know the historical background ( I can’t tell in two lines here :P) You may choose to take a boat ride from the bank of palace itself, but it will cost more so I would suggest to skip it, as you will get clot of boats, outside the palace at Pichola Lake.

Timings: 9.30 am – 5.30 pm, all days

Entry fees: ₹50 for adults, ₹30 for children aged 5 to 18 years old. There is a separate fees for camera, ₹250 for still or video.

Other activities: There is a crystal gallery that showcases the precious jewels of maharajas of past. The entry fees is ₹500 for adults and ₹300 for children aged 5 to 18 years old. There are two sound and light show in City Palace daily. The Legacy Of Honour is from 7pm to 8pm and costs ₹150 for adults and ₹75 for children. Yash Ki Dharohar is from 8pm to 9pm and costs ₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children.

Next thing take a Boat ride at Lake Pichola, second among the two famous lakes in Udaipur. The Pichola Lake is the centre point of the old city and is famous for many restaurants established on the banks of the lake.

Timings: 9am to 6pm, all days. The boat ride is for 25 minutes. There are special sunset boat rides that take place around half an hour before the expected time of sunset every day.

Entry fees: Price for a boat ride at Lake Pichola is ₹400 per person for adults and ₹200 for children. There are special sunset boat rides that cost ₹700 per person for adults and ₹400 for children.

Other activities: Gangaur ghat near Lake Pichola is a popular ghat and right next to it Bagore ki Haveli. A palace you can visit during the day and one that plays host to fascinating dance performances every evening. A dance show, Dharohar Dance Show, is generally an hour and half long and starts at 7pm daily. The cost is ₹60 for Indians and ₹100 for foreigners. The camera fees is ₹100.

Head to the Karni Mata rope way, which is near to the lake Pichola itself. This place gives you a mesmerising view of the city, Lake Pichola and city Palace. After noon is certainly not a good time to visit in summers, go in evening if you have more than one day.

Timings: 9am to 9pm

Entry fee: ₹72 for adults, ₹36 for children for Indians. ₹300 for adults and ₹150 for children for foreigners.

Roam around the Sahelion ki baadi if it is not a hot day. Famous for its lush green gardens, colourful flowers and marble fountains, it is a popular tourist attraction in Udaipur. The garden has four water pools, chiseled kiosks, marble elephants, lotus pool and bird-fountains.

Timings: 8am to 8pm

Entry fee: ₹5 per person

Around 4 pm, reach Sajangarh Fort for the lovely sunset, car/bike goes until the top and it is a 5-6km ride from city. The road goes through the wild life sanctuary and Ghat, so make sure you reach there by 5pm (Check local timings as per the season you are visiting). Sajangarh fort gives you a 360-degree view of city with two big lakes and vegetation surrounding the gorgeous city.

Timings: 8am to 6pm

Entry fee: ₹10 per person for Indians and ₹80 per person for foreigners.

Other activities: There is also a wildlife sanctuary at the base of the palace, where you can take a safari. It's open from 8am to 5.30pm, all days except Tuesday. The safari lasts about an hour and costs ₹30 per person. for Indians and ₹300 for foreigners. Camera fees is ₹80 for Indians and ₹200 for foreigners.

You will be back from Sajangarh around 7 pm. Next thing is the Exotic dinner you must take at the Pichola lakeside. City palace is lightened up every evening (until 10pm), which gives a breathtaking view of lake and reflection of monuments in water. Go to Ambrai Restaurant, it is the best among all. Other might offer you roof top but this restaurant has the best view and it is just adjacent to lake.

Timings: 7am to 3.30pm, 6.30pm to 11pm

Price for two: ₹1,700

Must eat: Lal Maans, Kheer, Mocktails, Chicken Tikka.

As soon as you come out of the restaurant, take immediate left (walking); you will find yourself on the Ambrai Ghat. This place is peaceful and serene (You will see this Ghats while boating in Lake Pichola). Sit on the stairs, dip your legs and spent some time here, witnessing the silence of lake.

Timings: 6am to 10pm

Entry fee: Nil

Before you say good night and good-bye to the city, grab a hot coffee at the lake Fatehsagar (Open until 11 pm). Lake Fatehsagar is flooded with youngsters, buzzing around the coffee shops and fast food restaurant on lakeside. Weather is pleasant in night and a hot coffee makes it even better.
