On Earth Day 2023, the Rajasthan Forest Department declared three new conservation reserves, including Sorsan in Baran, Hamirgarh in Bhilwara, and Khichan in Jodhpur, bringing the total number of conservation reserves in the state to 26. Wildlife enthusiasts and activists have long advocated for protecting these areas, home to endangered species such as the Great Indian Bustard and migratory birds like the Demoiselle Cranes.
The conservation reserves will be subject to mandatory clearance under the Forest Conservation Act 1990 and the approvals of the State Board of Wildlife and the National Board for Wildlife, ensuring that any development projects within the area are carefully scrutinized. Overall, the declaration of these conservation reserves is a significant step towards preserving the natural habitats of Rajasthan's wildlife and ensuring their continued existence for generations to come.
