Pondicherry To Soon Be Plastic-Free

Tripoto

There are several iconic tourist spots in India that have unfortunately come to be associated with filth and garbage. The excessive use of plastic products and their subsequent disposal methods play a big role in the same. Acting on the same, Puducherry Government has announced a ban on single-use plastic products starting June 5. The move is expected to go a long way in promoting sustainable tourism in the union territory.

The Chief Minister of Puducherry, V. Narayanasamy made the above announcement. He said that he believes in giving the future generations a healthy environment. According to a report by Outlook Traveller, Narayanasamy is said to have been inspired by the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, where a similar ban was imposed in early 2019. Puducherry is the latest entrant in the long list of Indian states to have banned single-use plastic. As many as 20 states and Union Territories which include Maharashtra, Odisha and West Bengal, among others had imposed similar bans before.

The move to take off plastic from the streets of Puducherry didn't come about easy. The state government had planned to implement the ban starting March 1. Plastic manufacturers and traders soon took to the streets, protesting against the ban. After overcoming the hurdles, the state government is all set to put the ban in place from June 5.
