A trip to God's own country is incomplete without visiting the gateway to heaven, God's abode.
Immersed in a constant flowing of misty fog in a steady fashion, this place is located on a hilltop, part of the glorious Western Ghat. Besides the cold breath of air that first tickles your senses, the green lush of the place is a sight to behold.
Home to a variety of flora and fauna, this place sits proudy along the banks of Kallar River and hence hosts a number of rivulets and rapids.
Numbers:
It is located 55km from the city centre and sits at an altitude of 1100m above sea level.
It takes 1.5 to 2 hr to get to the hilltop from the main railway station and bus stand.
About 1km trek into the forest would get to the
Meenmutty waterfall.
Things to do:
1. Take a dip in the Kallar waterfall.
2. Swim further down into the rapids.
3. Go to the very top of the hill at dusk or dawn to see the golden streaks of sunlight painted in the sky.
4. Visit the nearby Peppara wildlife sanctuary.
How to get there:
Cheapest way to get there is to reach TRIVANDRUM CENTRAL railway station at Thampanoor, cross the road to reach the KSRTC bus stand and catch a bus to Ponmudi. Bust ticket costs around 50 bucks one way. Bus goes all the way upto the top of the hill.
Buses are available at 10.30 and 11.30 am. From there you can get the return bus to Trivandrum Central directly from the hill top bus stand, with the last one leaving at 6pm. Don't miss that bus or you'll be stranded among unknown beasts of the night. Other than that its all chill.
