The modern traveler can barely appreciate a moment of solitude in our contemporary existence … so much to do, so little time. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t take an extravagant luxury retreat, as nice as those may be. Sometimes a weekend well spent is all it takes to rest and recharge. Here are five tried and tested things you don’t want to miss on the ultimate weekend getaway in the charming ‘French capital of India’, Pondicherry (or Puducherry).

When I imagined Pondicherry, the first thing that came to mind was its French hangover. So naturally when I visited, my favorite thing to do was take a stroll through the beautiful streets of White Town, the French quarter of Pondy. Highly walkable and full of little boutique stores and eateries, you’ll find plenty to appreciate in this of microcosm of blended Franco-Tamil architecture.

Aptly named, this private beach is truly a slice of paradise on Earth. Think white sands and an endless coastline. We got more than we bargained for during the 30-minute boat ride there, where the real surprise was the scenic view of the backwaters of Pondicherry.

Nestled in an indoor area, you won’t break a sweat haggling with vendors over Pondicherry’s famed handicrafts here. From textiles to tapestries and jewelry to carvings, this is your one-stop shop for all.

Bonus: Just behind the market is Rock Beach. Best to visit early in the morning before the bazaar opens and the sun really hits, or in the evening when the seaside promenade is buzzing with activity.

Pondicherry is hot. And you’re going to want to take breaks from time to time. After stepping off Rock Beach, I enjoyed the peaceful aura of this distinctly white and blue, French style cathedral dating back to the 17th century. Of the many historical landmarks in Pondy, this chapel should be on your list.

No trip is complete without food, and Pondicherry’s quaint French cafes promise a culinary experience like no other. If there’s one place you’re going to dine at in Pondicherry, let it be the famed Coromandel Café, which is delightful whether you go at day or night (and absolutely worth the hype). When in Pondicherry, do as the Parisians do – take your time and savor your fare.

Pro tip: They don’t take reservations in advance, so get there a little early to beat the inevitable crowds at this popular joint.

But honestly, every nook and cranny of Pondicherry – be it the colonial villas, chic boutiques or seaside promenade – is a traveler’s gold mine. I say ditch your devices and explore this former French colony on foot for a truly relaxing getaway. Happy travels!
