Bhutan, the land of the Thunder Dragon is a jewel hidden away in the lap of the Mighty Himalayas. 2013 was the time when you could simply walk into this Himalayan Kingdom armed with nothing more than a photo ID card as proof of your Indian Citizenship. Prominent land crossing is at Phuentsholing just across a small gate from Jaigon on the India Side. The gate stays open till 2000 hrs BST which is 30 mins ahead of IST. Bear that in mind as most Bhutanese are very punctual and being on IST will make you miss the time slot appointments.
Apart from the intrepid overlander, Paro serves as the entry point for the flyer in you. The Paro international airport is the only airport in Bhutan which caters to regular international flights. Though only Druk Air operates from here, as Paro is a special airport and only less than 15 pilots in the entire world are type certified to fly to Paro. The airport is a scenic one situated on the banks of the Paro Chu. Chu means a river. There are regular flights to Paro from New Delhi, Guwahati, Dhaka and a few more South East Asian countries.
Apart from the astonishingly stunning landscapes and surreal beauty of the Paro valley, the highlight of the visit is the refreshing trek to the Tiger's Nest or Taktsang Gompa. The most holy and revered site associated with Guru Padmasambhava. Another interesting spot to visit is the Paro Dzong or the Fort. Excellent roads, terrific weather, warm hospitable people and serene surroundings makes me want to visit this piece of Heaven once again.
