When you're headed to the French Riviera, don't miss out on a day trip to Monaco. Monaco is this charming little place, almost like a speck on the map, right along the coast of France. It's famous for being a playground for the rich and famous, with fancy shops, flashy casinos, and even the home of Prince Albert II. Now, I'm no high roller, so I couldn't spend the night in those lavish suites, but let me tell you, there's plenty to do in Monaco for a single day that'll make you feel like you've seen something truly special.
I hopped on this nifty Hop on Hop Off bus tour. It's like a sightseeing adventure on wheels. Monaco has its share of steep hills, and let me tell you, even though walking is nice, my legs would've given up on me. The bus was a lifesaver, dropping me off at various spots. Oh, and if you're coming from Nice, there's this cute little train tour that brings you right into Monaco. I totally recommend it.
The Hop on Hop off bus tour costs ₹2,080 per person.
Now, the first stop was the Prince's Palace. This is where Prince Albert hangs his hat. Unfortunately, his private quarters are off-limits, but the State Apartments are open for exploration between April and October. Let me tell you, walking through these rooms in a palace that's been around since the 13th century is like stepping into a fairytale. There are grand rooms for fancy receptions and even a throne room. The place is adorned with frescoes, portraits, tapestries, and all sorts of family treasures. And the view from up there, it's like a postcard of the French Riviera and Monaco's beautiful harbor.
The cost to enter the palace is ₹900 for adults and ₹600 for children.
Speaking of the harbor, you've got to check out those fancy yachts. If you're into boats, this place is heaven. And if you're short on time, just catch the view from the Prince's palace.
Next up, the Oceanographic Museum. Small and easy to explore – that's my kind of museum. If you've got little ones in tow, it's a nice break from all the walking. Plus, you get some hands-on time with sea life. Tickets won't break the bank, and it's smart to get them in advance.
The cost to enter the museum is around ₹1700 for adults and around ₹950 for children.
And then there's the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. It's where the past Princes of Monaco rest, including Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. It's not the fanciest cathedral I've seen, but it's got that historical charm.
Ah, the beach – one of Monaco's highlights. Now, this is no ordinary beach with sand between your toes. Nope, it's pebbles. So, water shoes are your friends. Oh, and just a heads up, toplessness is a thing here, so don't be shocked if you see some sunbathers embracing the freedom.
Now, that winding street along the harbor? That's the famous Circuit de Monaco, where the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix races. It's so narrow and steep; you won't believe cars zoom through here. I strolled around for a bit, but I saved my energy for the casino.
Monte Carlo – ever heard of it? It was a sleepy town, and then Prince Charles III decided a casino would be its savior. So, the district around it became Monte Carlo. It's like the playground for the rich and famous, and I felt like I'd stepped into a movie. Monaco and its casino were the locations for a number of James Bond movies, including Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye, as well as for the "Casino Royale" episode of CBS's Climax!
And speaking of the casino, it's quite the experience. You need to pay to play, and even to enter. It cost me around 17 Euros, but the catch was having the right shoes. Sneakers, sandals, and flip-flops? Nope, not allowed. And kiddos, they can't tag along either.
Oh, and don't miss the Opera de Monte-Carlo, part of the casino. It's a masterpiece inside and out. A performance wasn't in the cards for me, but strolling around was worth it.
The Hôtel de Paris was my next stop. This place is lavishness personified, with fancy restaurants and even a private beach. It's been in movies like James Bond's escapades and Iron Man 2. I didn't stay there, but I slipped inside (looking snazzy, of course) and had a drink at The Bar American.
All in all, spending a day in Monaco and Monte Carlo was a treat. It's like a taste of the French Riviera, a snapshot of glitz and glam, and a dash of history – all in one unforgettable day.
