As a frequent traveler with trains, My connection with them goes a long way to my childhood times. I have done many train journeys while exploring the country. Traveling through Bhubaneswar to Koraput is one train route that especially admire because of its scenic views and clean train.
The 'Hirakhand Express' that travels from capital city of Odisha to Jagadalpur in Chattisgarh. This passes through Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and takes a detour towards Rayagadha in the mountains and then crosses many valleys and descends towards Koraput and further to the state of Chattisgarh.
I have availed two opportunities of traveling on this route in last two years and have found this route to be very pleasant. I think this is among the most beautiful train routes in India as it cris-crosses through the Ghats, mountains, valleys, and many tunnels. Pictures shared here does not do the complete justice with the landscape, scenery, and people.
Train passes through the heartland of India's Indigenous Populations and there are many opportunities of interacting with diverse local populations. This train route is also associated with the different mineral ores that fuel our economy and provide goods to the urban centre of India and abroad. Anyone who gets a chance to take this route should definitely travel in this part of the country.
There are small stations with clean view, green view and Banyan trees :). Koraput is also known as the hill-station of Odisha and houses a big unit of HAL in Sunabeda. During my stay in Sunabeda, it rained continuously for four days with no sunlight in sight. God, I miss those rains now!
During the Sunabeda, we went for local sight seeing in the rain. We visited an important sacred cultural space towards Damnjodi which is revered by both the tribal people and the others. It is located in Bamboo grove and is spectacular to get an understanding of the belief system and how they evolve over the ages. There is a famous Ram temple with a huge statue of Hanuman ji.
After spending few days in Sunabeda, we took road trip through Ghats to Srikakulam and then through NH-5 arrived at Bhubaneswar. The road route is fascinating as well. It passes along the eastern ghats mountains on the one side and the Bay of Bengal by the other. You get fascinating views of the Chilka lake on your way to Bhubaneswar.
