Konark is a sleepy little village in Odisha, located around 70km from the capital city of Bhubaneshwar. At first glance, no one would guess that this nondescript place holds one of the greatest historical treasures of India!
The Sun Temple in Konark is one of the most beautiful temples in the country, with intricate carvings and exquisite architecture. Designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, this temple dates back to the 13th century and is built in the form of the chariot of the Sun God, with twelve pairs of wheels drawn by seven horses evoking its movement across the heavens.
To preserve this heritage and attract tourism, the Odisha Government has decided to develop "Konark Sun Temple Complex" as part the Konark Heritage Area Development Plan (KHADP) under the Integrated Development of Heritage & Monuments and Tourist Destination Scheme.
The Odisha Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday, the 29th of May, has approved the project with an outlay of Rs. 209 Crore. The work is targeted to be completed within 18 months.
The development project is aimed at transforming the physical infrastructure in and around the temple complex, and upgrading the visitors' experience.
In another similar decision, the state government has approved the proposal to launch the "Ekamra Kshetra Amenities and Monuments Revival Action Plan" for the provision of amenities and revitalization of various ancient monuments of the Old Town area in Bhubaneswar, including the 11th century Lord Lingaraja Temple. Rs. 156 crore has been sanctioned for this project.
With these initiatives, the ancient monuments of Odisha will get a breath of fresh air and make it convenient for travelers to visit these places, and appreciate our rich heritage.
