Visiting Tegernsee and spending a day there was on my bucket list since I learned about the place. Tegernsee is commonly known as the resort town in Bavaria, on the shore of Tegernsee lake. Tegernsee is a 725-meter-long lake near Wallberg mountain. Before visiting, I checked about the place on Youtube and Google and planned for a day trip.
On June 11, I started early at about 4.30 AM to avoid the crowd from my place. I am a student from India staying in Erlangen. There was no direct train to Munich or Tegernsee from Erlangen. I started from Erlangen, took a train to Nuremberg (less than 30 mins), and boarded another train from Nuremberg for Munich. It took around 1 hour and 30 mins to reach Munich. While travelling to Munich, you can enjoy the scenic view from the train. From Munich, every 1 hour you will get a train to Tegernsee but be careful to board the correct coach. From Munich, the train will start, but after travelling a certain distance, the train will split, half of it will go in a different direction, and half will go to Tegernsee, so while boarding the train, please check the if the coach is going to Tegernsee. It will take around 1 hour from Munich to reach Tegernsee. Once you get there, you will have many options; you can explore the town, relax by the lakeside parks or go to the Wallberg mountain. I went for Wallberg mountain. To get there, I took a bus from Tegernsee station to Wallbergbahn. From Wallbergbahn, you can decide to go to the top of the hill by cable car or walk. In the cable car, it cost me 25 euros (both ways).
"The best view comes after the hardest climb."
Someone said it right!
Well, it does not apply to me, as I took the cable car.
The view and the atmosphere were very relaxing. On one side, you can view the beautiful Tegernsee lake and the towns surrounding the lake, and on the other side, you can see the range of hills. The air was so fresh that it took away all my stress. You can sit there for an entire day and enjoy the view. Wallberg is also a very loveable place for the paragliders as I have seen a lot of people carrying their kits for paragliding.
After spending around 3 hours, I started for the lake. Again, I took a bus from Wallbergbahn and went to the city area. You can get down anywhere in the city and start exploring the city by walking. I got down at the Seeforum bus stop (Rottach-Egern area) and walked around the Seestrasse. The architecture of the houses in this area will catch your eyes. There are a couple of restaurants in this area too. I packed my lunch from home, so I didn't go inside any restaurant. But in most restaurants, the price starts from 8 euros.
Next, I went to Schlossplatz, which is located in Tegernsee. You can walk or take a bus to Tegernsee Gymnasium to get there. Here, you have an option to experience the cruise ride or visit the nearby church. This place was quite crowded in the afternoon. People were sunbathing, swimming in the lake or just relaxing by the lakeside.
I spent most of my time walking around the lake and clicking photographs. I started from Tegernsee around 5 PM and followed the same route (Tegernsee - Munich - Nuremberg - Erlangen) back home.
Tegernsee and its surrounding area is a lovely place for a day trip. You can visit this place in summer and autumn if you want to go for a hike or do a picnic.
Places to eat: You can go to Wallberg Panorama restaurant on top of Wallberg hill. There are also a couple of restaurants in Seestrasse (Rottach-Egern) and cafes in Schlossplatz (Tegernsee).
Cost: Bavaria Ticket (26 euros) + Wallbergbahn (25 euros)
