Known as the Spice Island

Grenada is referred to as the “Spice Island” because it produces a large number of spices; in fact, it is the second-largest producer of nutmeg in the world! Apart from this, other spices that are cultivated on the island include cloves, cinnamon and ginger.

Christopher Columbus is said to have discovered Grenada on one of his voyages in 1498 and named it “Concepcion”. Though he did not colonise it, the country fell under French control in 1649 and subsequently the British in 1763; it gained its independence from the latter in 1974.

Popular with snorkelers and divers, this park can also be viewed on glass-bottom boat rides. It’s home to more than 60 human sculptures which also serve as an artificial reef in this protected marine area.
