Turning 30 is often associated with a sudden influx of wisdom and responsibilities. For most, it is that milestone in life that you dread as you get closer to it, while others find comfort in the 'age is just a number' philosophy. Whatever your idea for the age is, this man and his recent achievement will give you major goals and inspiration.
Meet Nick Butter, a 30-year-old British man, who now holds the record for being the first person to run a marathon in every country of the world.
About the man!
Nick Butter hails from Dorset, South of England and formerly worked as a banker. His journey began on January 6, 2018 and in less than just two years, he reached his ultimate target of running a marathon in every country of the world. He achieved the feat, recently, completing the Athens Classic Marathon in Greece. Upon receiving the title for running in all 196 countries, he said "it felt like a rebirth".
What inspired him?
Butter named Kevin Webber, a man he met at a race in the Sahara Desert as his inspiration. Webber who was diagnosed with terminal Prostate cancer, refused to give in, despite his condition. His determination inspired Nick Butter to set out on a mission to raise money to fight against the deadly disease. In fact, Webber joined Butter in Greece for this final milestone and the two completed the marathon together.
It wasn't easy!
Butter said that before starting out in 2018, he had spent two years, just planning the entire process which took a team of 30 people. The tiring task of running 26.2 miles was only the tip of the iceberg. He also had to deal with complex visa processes, a lot of uncomfortable foreign interactions, and countless injuries.
The 196-countries marathon runner had to file for 10 passports. At times, he even had to return to his home-country, the United Kingdom only to pick up a new visa. He endured quite many mishaps throughout his journey including getting bit by a dog, being robbed at knifepoint, and being put away in a cell.
What are the plans for future?
After enduring countless difficulties in his path, Nick Butter proved everyone who thought he would give up, wrong. Of course, those too who thought that he was about to settle down after achieveing this wishful goal by announcing that he’s taking a break only for a couple of days and will be back on the track soon!
