We all have bucket lists and we try to make our bucket list as fascinating as we could. Same ways my bucket list consist of all the travelling all around the world, try different cuisines, interact with people and make new friends, meet the challenges, hike to the unseen corners of the world, travel solo, indulge in experiences more local than luxurious and most importantly, try all those adventurous sports.!
On our last trip to New Zealand, we visited Queenstown, the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’. We had to try all that the place had to offer. We went Sky Diving, Bungee Jumping, Nevis swing, Shotover Jet boat ride, kayaking and so. I would accept that before I went Sky Diving, I was scared to death. Though I was jumping with a Tandem, yet the thought of free fall was scaring. After the jump the only thing I did was to let go. What an Experience it was! We jumped from 15000 ft and the air on my face was crazy. The views were beyond spectacular. Though I did pat my back as I added another feather specially with the Sky dive and Swing, on my hat, I wouldn’t say that this was my biggest achievement.
My biggest achievement was an undersea walk in Mauritius. I am a complete non swimmer and am scarred to jump in a shallow swimming pool, let alone walking on the sea bed. But I had decided to challenge myself on this one. To normal people, it wont sound scary as they give you huge helmets filled with oxygen which overs up our shoulders and above. So, no worries if you wear contact lens or if you are worried how you would breathe. That because no water could enter in the helmet. But since I am a non-swimmer, the thought of being under water scared me.
So, we reached the place and changed into out costumes. It was a scenic boat ride to the spot in the middle of the sea, where the boat stopped for us to start out adventure. I wouldn’t say I was scared, I was rather numb. They geared us up and one by one we had to climb down to start our sea bed walk. I just wouldn’t let the bars of the boat go. Kunal, on the other hand, being an adventure junkie was like a fish in the water..!
Finally and slowly I let the bar go and within seconds I was on the sea bed! It took me a minute to realise where I was and to balance my feet on the ground. “Just remember to pull the helmet down! It shall help you stay underwater and hold the ground”, my instructor had instructed on the boat. I pulled it down with all my might and once balanced, I started noticing the view around me. School of fishes, coral and under water vegetation adorned the saline water. It was the most wonderful 10 mins under water. It was all so mesmerising that I completely forgot about the fear of being down there.
It was an achievement for me, as I now know that I will be more confident in trying out anything to do with water. It was a goal accomplished, a fear overcome and a check on my bucket list.!
