If you are looking for a destination to satisfy your taste buds and your wanderlust, look no further than India. It's a land of kaleidoscopic diversity, and nowhere is this more evident than in its cuisine. From the fiery curries of the north to the coconut-laced delicacies of the south, India offers a feast for the senses that is hard to resist. In 2023, the world took notice of India’s gastronomic excellence, as the country made a remarkable impression on the prestigious Taste Atlas rankings.

India Ranks 11th Among the World’s Best Cuisines

Taste Atlas, a renowned food guide based in Croatia, has been a champion of Indian cuisine for years, featuring its varied dishes and legendary restaurants on several global lists. The eagerly awaited annual rankings for 2023 were no different, and India, with its rich mosaic of flavours, made a resounding splash.

The announcement of Taste Atlas’ “100 Best Cuisines in the World List” shook the culinary world as India secured the impressive 11th position. Outshining culinary powerhouses such as the USA, Thailand, and South Korea, Indian cuisine’s 11th rank came with a remarkable score of 4.52 — just 0.02 points behind Peru’s standing. Italy, Japan, Greece, Portugal, and China claimed the top spots, while India’s culinary legacy stood proud among the global elite.

India Dominates the List of the World’s Best Dishes

But the accolades did not end there. Taste Atlas’ method of culinary rankings involved evaluating a staggering 395,205 dishes and 115,660 food products from various cuisines worldwide. The top 50 food items for each cuisine were carefully selected, and the best-rated cuisines were ranked based on the average ratings of these dishes. Four entries from India secured positions within the top 50 of Taste Atlas’ “100 Best Dishes in the World” list.

The Butter Garlic Naan — a ubiquitous delight across India — claimed the 7th spot with an impressive score of 4.67. Following closely was the beloved Murgh Makhani, or Butter Chicken, ranking 43rd with a score of 4.54.

Notably, dishes such as Tikka and Tandoori also made a mark, securing the 47th and 48th positions, each with a score of 4.54.

Beyond individual dishes, the food guide has previously acknowledged Indian landmarks like Paragon and Peter Cat in its list of the Most Iconic Eateries worldwide, further cementing the global impact of Indian cuisine.

India’s culinary triumph in 2023 is a testament to the country’s rich and diverse food culture, which has evolved over centuries of history, geography, and influences. India’s cuisine is not only a source of pride for its people, but also a magnet for travellers who want to experience the authentic flavours of the subcontinent. India is truly a food lover’s paradise, and the world is taking notice.
