Melita Koulmandas Hunter arrived in Combodia along with her husband Rory Hunter who was an advertising professional in Phnom Penh. The Australian couple had a strict plan to return to New York within one year but destiny had a different story for them in a mystic island thousand miles away from home.
After one year in Cambodia, this happy family of three (with their son, Naryth) went on a vacation 18 miles off the coast from Sihanoukville.
In 2005 they were the first foreigners who stepped on this island where the wide-eyed locals saw them as harbingers of change and offered them a private island for $15000 (approx 9 lakhs INR).
It was then that Rory and Melita became the owners of a private island and accidental hoteliers when Melita planned to build a resort on the island.
Melita was diagnosed with cancer just two year after they started Song Saa. But the persistent struggle of the couple, despite the setback, is now seen as the line of 27 beautiful villas in the turquoise waters.
Not only is it an unbelievable story that this couple bought a private island for less than 10 lakhs INR but also that they turned it into a stunning dream.
We are all running a race to acquire things but the choices of this family to move away from the big city dream, through this intelligent investment, gives all of us a moment to reassess our lives.
Calculate the cost of living in an expensive city or the cost of your sedan (that's not even your dream car) but you own it. If you can get a secret private island for less than that, now is the time to make amends.
It took the Hunter family to travel a thousand miles to a distant island in South Asia, to build a dream for themselves. Click here to view their stunning dream of Song Saa unfold.

10 lakhs, that's all it's worth. Next time you do your monthly budgeting, save a little for a private island too.
