Waking up to the harsh sun blazing down on a smouldering Delhi, my first reaction was not to complain like I usually would — I had done that repeatedly for the last one month. Instead, I surprised myself by promptly booking a quiet getaway in the hope of finding respite in cooler climes. And so, began my journey to the wilderness of Corbett that was well within reach, only 5 hours away from home. Hurtling towards my vacation, I was excited to redefine my Monday by logging into work not from office, but from the luxurious lap of Aahana Resort.
A suite resembling a sanctuary
Aahana Resort sits adjoining the Bijrani Zone of the Corbett National Park. As sweet birdsong and towering trees welcomed me into the 14-acre big property, it was evident that the resort was an extension of its neighbour, the forest– peaceful, endless and immensely verdant. The kindest staff bearing bouquets and welcome drinks accompanied me to my top end room— the Rangers Suite. My room was everything one wishes for during a staycation. In fact, it felt like a sanctuary itself. The room was extremely spacious, with a beautifully decorated seating area that was equipped with a TV and a study table where I instantly knew I was going to spend most of my time. This space led into my bedroom that boasted of a massive bed dressed in massive fluffy-white pillows and vibrant cushions. The washroom too was a fabulous affair, the star of which was a bathtub overlooking the forest. As I leapt into bed, I saw that this wasn't it!
My room came with a balcony that overlooked a forest of sal trees that stood resembling a battalion, lined neatly one after the other, as far as I could see. During my stay, spending my early mornings in the balcony, sipping on fresh coffee became a highlight. The forest behind would stir silently with activities of animals and insects I couldn't see but every time I stared into its depths, it felt like it would whisper its secrets to me.
I would have happily spent all my time in my room if it weren't for the various activities and experiences that Ahaana Resort offers. The most special of them all was its elaborate spread of food!
The cherry on top: Lip-smacking food
The dining hall of the resort is situated by the swimming pool and is no less than a magical cavern where an eclectic variety of food, salads and desserts appears at every step you take. During my two-day stay at Aahana, I had the most lavish breakfast. Whether you're someone who prefers a nutritious one teeming with sprouts, yogurt, fresh juices and nuts or you like to indulge in generous helpings of dosa-sambhar, poha, sausages or croissants, the breakfast buffet has it all. If it were possible, the resort steps up its game even more during lunches and dinners. Indian, continental, Chinese, Italian, Burmese, vegetarian, meats, seafood— you name it and you'll be served the best of it at Aahana Resort.
Although it's difficult to choose a favourite, I sure was starstruck by the Kumaoni Thali that comes with 12 authentic dishes and is the perfect gateway to the rich Kumaoni culture. If you, like me are someone who gets uncomfortable evening hunger pangs, you'll be delighted to know that Aahana Resort offers a delicious tea spread that will take your breath away. Along with tea that is served in tapri style, coffee and juices, there are a host of snacks , ranging from piping hot pakoras and sandwiches to yummy maggi made right in front of you. What I loved about the evening tea was the fact that it was different every day. It would be the perfect surprise to walk into after a hard day at work.
Yes, I am guilty of gorging on food while at Aahana, but I enjoyed it all guilt-free since there were a number of activities where I could burn all my holiday calories!
Activities at Aahana Resort
1. Swimming and cycling
Aahana Resort has a beautiful swimming pool (for kids and adults alike!) where you can swim from 8am - 8pm. If you're not too fond of water, you can hop onto a bicycle and can leisurely explore the vast expanse of the property.
2. Birdwatching and nature walk
Since the resort is located right by the forest, it is home to various species of birds. At Aahana, you will be taken on a guided tour by an expert birdwatcher who will help you identify vibrant birds through their calls! During this walk, be prepared to be taken aback by the sheer variety of unique tress and plants that thrive at Aahana. I was lucky enough to enjoy the juiciest lichees, plucked freshly off the tree. If you are travelling with children, this close interaction with nature is one that they will thoroughly enjoy.
3. Safari in Jim Corbett
No trip to Corbett is complete without an expedition in its deep jungles. You can book a canter and head in to witness a variety of wildlife like elephants, deer, sloth bears, crocodile, leopards and of course, the elusive, the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger.
4. Indoor games
When you want to spend time relaxing, you can indulge in games of pool, carrom, chess, cards and table tennis.
5. Fitness, mindfulness and spa
The resort also has a fitness centre for those who are never on holiday when it comes to their fitness regimen. If you're someone who prefers more subtle forms of self-care, you can attend yoga session held at the resort every morning or pamper yourself with a rejuvenating full-body spa at their naturopathy centre.
With so much on offer at Aahana Resort, I couldn't recommend it more! Whether you are heading for a solo staycation or taking a whole party with you, this resort is the ideal getaway to pamper yourself to the fullest.
