The Delhi Government has finally picked a date for free travel in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses for women. Starting from 29th Oct 2019, all females can travel in Delhi’s DTC-run buses without any cost.

The government scheme is planned to continue till March 2020 after its implementation on Bhai Dooj on October 29th. Sources report that since the introduction of the scheme is likely to increase the density of female travellers in buses, the DTC board is also working towards procuring 300 electric buses.

A pink ticket will be issued for women passengers who wish to travel for free in DTC and cluster buses approved by the DTC board. The announcement was made on Monday, 23rd September. The pink tickets will have a face value of Rs 10 each. The government will then reimburse the transporter depending upon the number of pink tickets issued.

It is estimated that Rs 140 crore will be spent towards this initiative. The approval of this scheme last month came with the information that it is still voluntary. Females may or may not choose to avail it as per their convenience.

Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced in June that the Delhi government aims to provide free travel for women in metro trains and buses in Delhi. While the scheme is yet to receive approvals for free rides in Delhi metro, the buses here are ready to be a part of the revolutionary objective. Its efficiency, however, will be proven only in times to come.
