A Mega Museum in the Making:
The museum will be housed in the North and South blocks, home to some of the iconic buildings hosting some of the government's most important ministries and offices. The museum will cover an area of 1.17 lakh sqm with 950 rooms spread over a basement and three storeys. It will have eight thematic segments that will tell the story of India, spanning over 5,000 years.
The segments will include:
Ancient Indian knowledge: Learn about the Vedas, Upanishads, Ayurveda, Yoga, and other treasures of Indian thought and science.
Ancient to medieval: The rise and fall of various empires and kingdoms that shaped India's political and cultural landscape, from the Mauryas to the Mughals.
Medieval to transition phase: Discover how India encountered and interacted with foreign invaders and traders, such as the Turks, Mongols, Portuguese, Dutch, and British.
Modern India: Understand how India fought for its freedom from colonial rule and emerged as a sovereign nation with a democratic constitution.
Colonial rule: The impact of British rule on India's economy, society, culture, and politics, as well as the resistance movements that challenged it.
Freedom struggle: Relive the heroic saga of India's struggle for independence, led by Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters.
Post-independence: Celebrate India's achievements and challenges in the last 100 years and its vision for the future.
A Sneak Peek into the Museum:
On May 18, International Museum Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a virtual walkthrough of the upcoming museum. He also inaugurated a three-day International Museum Expo at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. On Wednesday evening, he unveiled the new name of the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex - Bharat Mandapam.
The virtual walkthrough gives a glimpse of the museum's appearance once it is completed. It shows how the exhibits will display various aspects of India's civilizational culture, such as town planning systems, medical knowledge, art forms, languages, religions, etc. It also shows how the museum will have gardens and open spaces for visitors to relax and enjoy.
A New Home for National Treasures:
The museum will also host the priceless treasures of the current National Museum on Janpath, which was established by Nehru in 1955. It boasts over 2 lakh artefacts spanning 5,000 years of Indian art and culture. The old museum building will join the Kartavya Path and its extensions. This is the grand avenue from India Gate to Raisina Hill, where the Republic Day parade dazzles yearly.
A Museum for All:
The Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum will be a magnet for anyone who admires India and its splendid legacy. It will fill every Indian with pride and inspiration by displaying India's gifts to the world and its remarkable diversity and unity. The museum is a part of the Central Vista Project, which will transform Delhi with new edifices for the Parliament, the Prime Minister, the Vice President, and other ministries.
The project will be completed by 2024. Until then, let's gear up to discover this unique museum that will salute India's past and future.
