As a traveller, I am always guilty of the massive carbon footprint that my passion to explore the word leaves behind. However, slowly but steadily, the world is moving towards more environment-friendly practices. According to sources, India is jumping on the bandwagon and has announced a project to construct electric highways in India for the very first time!
The first e-highway is being constructed from Delhi-Jaipur
The Delhi-Jaipur super expressway or NH 48 is expected to be transformed into an e-highway by mid-2022. This means that the expressway will soon support the charging of e-vehicles. The electric highway will recharge the batteries of the cars driving on it. Commenting on this project, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari said that these e-highways will focus on trucks that carry white good and FMCG products. He added to this, saying, "Buses and trucks can ply on this e-highway at a speed of 120 kmph and will bring down the logistics cost by 70 per cent.”
Along with the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, 20% of the Delhi-Mumbai Highway is also to be turned into an e-highway over the next few years.
So for all of you who have e-vehicles, your road trip from Delhi-Jaipur will soon be guilt free! Is this move a motivation for you to invest in an electric car? Tell us in the comments below!
