In this series of "Photographer's Quick Guide", I offer my learnings from shooting a place from a travel photographer's perspective.
In here I brief about planning, photo hot spots (and unique ones too), timings and tips about shooting at these destinations in a bid to help the travel photography community.
This one features - Delhi, the capital city of India.

1. Navamudras ‑ at Airport
As you fly into Delhi's Terminal 3, you'll see ths epic installation of hasta‑mudras (hand‑symbols) as you come down the escalator in the arrivals area.
Photo Tips :
1. Carry a fish eye lens or,
2. Make a vertical panorama to cover the grandscale.
2. Lotus Temple
The iconic Bahai temple, in southern part of the city.
Reason to visit : Architecture, Meditation
Best Time : Evenings, especially when it's lit up
Photo Tips :
‑ Double check seasonal time table
‑ Seek prior tripod permits. They usually allow, long as you mention it's for personal/website use. And you can offer them your images for their social media, as well. A win win proposition.
‑ Evenings are better to avoid rush
- Shoot late in the evening when the lights are on (check seasonal timings).
- Shoot in the changing light and cover the whole spectrum - golden light, twilight and under dark sky.
4. Humayun's Tomb Complex
The majestic tomb complex done in red sandstone.
Reason to visit : Mughal Architecture, History
Best Time : Early mornings
Photo Tips :
‑ Double check seasonal time table
‑ Difficult to get tripod permits though. Only handheld allowed
‑ Early mornings are better to avoid rush and shoot in golden light at peace
- Don't forget to shoot the grand interior (a fish eye lens or a vertical panorama)
5. Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House) Area
The cornerstone of Lutyen's modern Delhi architecture.
Reason to visit : Lutyen Architecture, History
Best Time : Evenings
Photo Tips :
‑ Reach while sun is still up, long lens silhouettes against setting sun
‑ Blue hour long exposures, traffic trails, lit up architecture
‑ Don't miss the water pools on either sides for awesome reflections
6. Lodhi Gardens
Delhi's very own Central Park.
Reason to visit : Walk in Nature, History
Best Time : Mornings and Evenings
Photo Tips :
‑ Reach early morning to get lesser rush and golden lit architecture
‑ Don't miss the centre pieces ‑ Shisha and Bada Gumbads
7. Delhi Metro & Yamuna Ghat
Yamuna ghat is the place to shoot riverside street life as well those flocks of migratory birds (I'm yet to shoot them)
Reason to visit : Street shots, Migratory Birds
Best Time : Early Mornings (winters espclly)
Photo Tips :
‑ Reach early morning to get moody fog frames
‑ Plan a visit in winters when the migratory birds flock the place
8. Waste to Wonders Park
Open air museum housing world's wonders done entirely by recycled scraps from landfill sites.
Reason to visit : Miniature of World's wonders
Best Time : Evenings

‑ Check time table
‑ Tripod allowed
‑ Evening Blue Hour works the best for lit up minatures against blue sky
9. Safdarjung Tomb
One of the most romantic tomb complexes especially when it's lit up in the evening.
Reason to visit : Architecture, History
Best Time : Evenings
Photo Tips :
‑ Check time table
‑ Tripod not allowed
‑ Evening Blue Hour works the best for lit‑up architecture
‑ Don't miss the "frame within a frame" shot from the entrance (as in this post)
10. Akshardham Temple
Magnificent spiritual cultural campus in East Delhi.
Reason to visit : Architecture, Hindu spirituality
Best Time : Evenings
Photo Tips :
‑ Tripod not allowed
‑ Don't miss the view from the walkover on the highway (on the left side) for views of Sunset against the temple (as in this post)
‑ Don't miss the quick frames from the walkway just in front of the campus
11. Rajghat Power Plant View from Yamuna
This evening view of the calm yamuna and the now decommissioned Rajghat Power Plant.
