If safety issues had been stopping you from taking a tour of the red-light district in Amsterdam, then this news will be music to your ears! The tourist favourite, Amsterdam is planning to shift a part of its red-light district indoors and the authorities are thus looking for a new ‘erotic centre’. The new indoor complex or a plausible ‘sex hotel’ in Amsterdam will provide more safety to sex workers as well as tourists.

What’s happening?

The existing work model at the red-light district allows workers to attract customers through glass windows, which mostly lures rowdy tourists, creating an unsafe environment for everyone involved.

The city council said that out of the several scenarios considered for the new complex, location is of prime importance. A remote location can lead to security issues due to difficulty in its supervision. Thus, the place is likely to be easily accessible by public transport.

Red-light districts are a source of income to many in Amsterdam and sources suggest that the authorities do not wish to push it to the outskirts of the city. Being respectful to the workers as well as the interested tourists, the new complex will be within the city near other popular sights.

Why?

According to sources, Femke Halsema, Mayor of Amsterdam, said that one of her staff recently complained of drunk and rowdy tourists disrespecting sex workers and residents. Mayor stated that she wants to clear the district of all possible disadvantages. The planned complex is likely to offer better amenities and increased security for workers and tourists alike. If a complex is not available, then plans to build a big sex hotel in Amsterdam are also in consideration.

Reports suggest that Halsema has further vowed to fight unlicensed underground prostitution in the Wallen region of Amsterdam. The place is well-known as a prime centre of sailors and sex workers alike for decades!

When will the sex hotel in Amsterdam be ready for tourists?

The plan is to finalise the sex hotel in Amsterdam before summer of 2020. Councillors will discuss the proposals in March. According to reports, city councillors have banned tour guides from taking tourists around red-light district windows in all parts of the city, starting April 2020.
