It was around Holi this year when I went to Naukuchiatal, a small hill station 25km from Nainital, with my family for a few days trip. Literally, Naukuchiatal means the lake of nine corners (Nau - nine, Kuchia - corner, Tal - lake). The place has a peaceful atmosphere, untouched by many people yet beautiful and scenic.
Let's look at the the various places I went to and my views/comments about the places.
These are cottages available for sale in Naukuchiatal. Very well constructed and with a great view of the hills from all the room windows! Since we knew the guy, we didn’t have to pay a lot for our stay. But if you can get hold of the place for a day or two, I would really recommend it.
Rarely does it happen that one goes to a nice hill station and one can expect homemade delicious food at a minimal price. Puran stays in a small house in Naukuchiatal and cooks food on request. Whatever you wish to eat, just call him an hour before. He will get the vegetables and prepare freshly delicious cooked food just for you! You can ping me to get his number in case you choose to go to Naukuchiatal. Trust me it will be worth the effort!
The word means it is a lake of nine corners! One can go boating or sit by the side and enjoy the serene beauty of the place.
Boating in the Nainital Lake is a calming experience. You can choose between a self driven peddle or a pilot ridden one. Cost - Rs 200 for a four person boat for an hour. I personally liked the pedal boat without the pilot. Here’s a tip of riding the pedal boat: Don’t try to pedal too hard, it will only tire you. Pedal as if you’re walking and the boat will sail as smooth as silk!
This place is all famous.. Tripadvisor rates it, Lonely Planet rates it. Which is why I went there at the first place. Personally, however, I think the place is overrated. The people take too long to serve food, the food was not freshly prepared and was cold too. It is not worth the money they charge for their food. I would give the place a 2 out of 5.
It is a very nice candle shop on the mall road, Nainital. They have a whole range of one of a kind candles available to decorate your homes. The candles start with just Rs 10 and range all the way to Rs 5000 and even more. A word of caution: Be ready to shell out a couple of thousand bucks if you choose to enter the store! The candle designs are really wonderful, you just won't be able to stop yourself from getting some good ones for yourself and gifts for others.
One of its kind, the temple has hundreds of thousands of bells all over, from the entrance steps to the temple premises. It is believed that the people whose wishes are fulfilled are asked to come back by the lord of the temple to give an offering in the form of tying a bell in the campus premise. The temple is a good visiting place for anyone, with/without religious inclinations, who travels to Nainital/Naukuchiatal.
