Last winter when I was in Nagaland for Hornbill Festival'19, I ended up visiting one of the Nagaland's best kept secret - Mima Village.
Mima is a small village adorning the hills of Nagaland. Nested in the bosom of Mt. Jafpu and around 16 kms from Kohima lies this beautiful hamlet which is native to the Angami tribe. It is famous for its unique traditional Apiculture where the bees have their hive underground and hence, it is also known as the 'The Honey Village' producing one of the best quality honey in the country.
What makes Mima Village even more distinct are its people, the culture and the offbeat charm. The views of breathtaking terrains of dazzling peaks, valleys and the sun shining with the seascape of beautiful clouds in the azure blue sky.
I visited Mima to witness a rare event of the Angami community, the traditional 'Stone Pulling Ceremony', which was also a part of the Hornbill Festival.
In this ceremony, a 9 feet monolith was being hauled uphill to the village. Pulling was done by the men and the women carried cane basket (Khang) filled with local rice beer (Zutho) and water and other eateries for their refreshment. From young to old, everyone from the Village had dressed up in their traditional attire to play their part in this ceremony. This sacred ceremony was celebrated to commemorate the village's 75 years of embracing Christianity which signifies the unity, strength and love amongst them.
