Oman not only offers much to see, do and experience but tempt your taste buds as well! Here are some of the best dishes to try when on a visit.
Majboos
Also referred to as kabsa, this dish might remind you of an Indian biryani. It has its own distinct flavour and consists of spiced basmati rice and various spices and meats be it chicken, camel, fish or lamb. Some restaurants will also serve majboos with green salad or yoghurt and traditional bread.
Mishkak
Well known as a street food, mishkak (or meshkak) is popular amongst meat lovers who can enjoy grilled mutton, chicken, beef or prawns which are normally cut into small pieces or cubes. These meats are marinated with various ingredients like curry powder, cardamom, garlic, raw papaya, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and more!
Chicken Kabouli
Very much like biryani, chicken kabouli (or qabooli) is another dish in Oman well worth savouring be it on a stay at a hotel in Sohar or Muscat. Apart from the yummy chicken, this traditional culinary creation features basmati rice that is made with a special masala blend of cinnamon, cloves, coriander and cardamom.
Halwa
Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy halwa; amongst the most popular dishes in Oman, this dessert is made using ingredients such as eggs, honey, rose water and sugar. It is often served with dates and coffee or “kahwa” and is perfect as a shared treat with family and friends.
