We have a very peculiar habit. To clean our courtyards, we dump our garbage in nature's garden. We take nature's silence for granted and forget that if she decides to defend herself then we would have no means to save ourselves.

The Cyclone Tauktae which made its landfall in Gujarat, Daman, Diu and other coastal states in India on 17th of May, have wreaked a havoc in those areas. Apart from the obvious destructions that the cyclone has caused to life and property, a strange phenomenon has been observed in Mumbai.

What is the strange phenomenon?

As per media reports, the cyclone has made the sea return all the man made trash back to the beaches of Mumbai and municipal corporation officials claimed that about four trucks of Garbage were collected from the premises of gateway of India alone.

Where in Mumbai did the trash accumulate?

As per sources, Civic solid waste management labourers removed garbage weighing approximately 62 tons from Mumbai's seven sea beaches namely Juhu, Girgaon, Dadar, Madh, Versova, Gorai and Chimbai. This was about 87% more than the garbage collected a few days before the storm.

What trash did the sea return?

The trash regurgitated by the sea mainly consisted of plastic bottles, wrappers, thermocol, rubber, chappals and shoes.

What are the effects of this return gift from the sea?

The trash not only littered the Mumbai beaches but also resulted in clogging of 25 water outlets with plastics and other trash resulting in water logging.

According to a report in Mirror, Kiran Dighavkar, the assistant municipal commissioner of A Ward said “It is obvious that people are throwing these stuff in the sea in violation of civic rules. We have clean-up marshals at all beaches in the city, but it doesn’t seem that all these wastes have been generated by Mumbai alone. It must have come from all coastal regions. Also, garbage thrown in storm water pipeline and the drainage system also end up in the sea,”

Cyclone Tauktae and the sea have starkly pointed out our sins. They have shown us that if, we do not change our ways and stop polluting nature, then nature has its own way of cleansing herself. Therefore, we must take lesson from this phenomenon and stop littering and aim at ending the usage of plastic.
