Street art came into existence since 1980's. It was all about graffiti over the street walls beautifying the lanes and sooner became an important aspect of the cities worldwide as it has given an identity to the urban areas. Year by year many artists and architects came up with the ideas of beautifying the alleys with street furnitures and various designed props which can be beneficial for the public use. We can see the best street art festivals in Montreal,Detroit,Nuart and many more. This western form of art has also made it's place in the commercial capital of India-Mumbai

Originated since 1999 the Kala Ghoda festival in Mumbai is known for its artistic exhibitions across the street with an active participation of the students of arts colleges across the city. This seven days festival is all about arts, music and theatre with various workshops held based on art and it also organises some plays and acts based on current social issues of the society. According to the sources it is the only big street festival held in India in the month of February. The Kala Ghoda festival association looks after the setup and arrangements of the street festival as well as donations. This is the only time where you see south of Mumbai in its vibrant color and art. The significance of this festival is as much important to the common people than to the artists.

Every year there is a new theme presented in the form of street art which is the only reason why it keeps attracting the locals and the tourists every year. It is preferable to visit during the evening time where you can see the beautiful lights and props decorated across the street. However as I have observed for past few years is that this street art festival is loosing its authenticity year by year due to the lack of interest of the officials and been neglected by them at the same time. As what I have experienced is that the street art is a very important part of the urban life, because that is the only way where you can see an entire city in one frame of the wall and alleys; and where you can experience and learn from the urban culture and lifestyle.

For me Kala Ghoda Street festival is the enchantress of Mumbai as it attracts the tourists and people of Mumbai with it's beauty of art and culture and hard efforts made by the artists which we can obviously see across the lane. And slowly this enchantress is loosing its charm!

Thing to do:- 1) Explore the street art with creative urban furniture, murals and installations.

2) Theatre performance is a must see

3) Painting exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery
