Leopold Cafe and Bar is a monumental landmark in South Mumbai. Its unmissable red and white signage have become synonymous with Colaba Causeway, where it stands since 1871. This café reflects the spirit of a city and has stood the test of time for over 140 years. In remembrance of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, here’s how the cafe and symbolically, the entire city has moved on since the tragedy.
Preserving the scars
This historic café still holds a punch and remains hugely popular amongst locals and tourists alike. The bullet marks on its walls continue to tell the horror story of the 2008 attacks. Instead of renovating or hiding these scars, the management here decided to preserve them. The bullet marks pay homage to all who suffered at the time.
The neighbourhood
The locality is well-known among those who love street-shopping. Leopold is a great pit-stop to refuel in the middle of a hefty shopping session. The passionate owners are a Parsi family whose dedication reflects well in the service of the restaurant. Spread across two floors, the ground floor of the cafe is always packed regardless the time of the day. The display of in-house bakery products will pull you in like a charm.
What’s inside?
Judging the cafe by its interiors or comparing the quality of food with the biggest food chains in today’s world is disrespectful. A visit to Leopold is an experience in itself. Leopold Cafe is to Colaba as is Taj Mahal to Agra. Expect a decent pricing, an impressive menu with many options, suitable portion sizes, amazing cocktails, and a delicious serving. The courteous serving staff is the icing on the cake and will keep you coming back for more!
