As the year 2020 bumped into the end of the road, the abode of clouds, Meghalaya shakes off the hovering clouds of uncertainty as it welcomes tourism again with arms wide open.
2020 had cast a dry spell onto our travel plans, and it is high time that we let our inner wanderer break free from shackles of confinement. The state of Meghalaya, in particular, plans to make this happen. After a long hiatus of 7 months, the land has opened its borders for tourists and travelers across the globe and also added some new soul-filling destinations to the golden line-up.
Here is a list of the newly added and modified travel destinations in Meghalaya:
Wei Sawdong: Located in the extremes of Sohra, this triple-decker waterfall is one of a kind. The brown-red hills washed by the crystal clear mountain water lapped in a blanket of the thick green forest is an unexplored paradise. Being in the remote area of Sohra, Wei Sawdong often goes under the radar, but the Meghalaya tourism board has recently taken a forward lunge to promote this piece of beauty. The spot can serve as an ideal luxury swimming spot in a gruesome humid summer afternoon.
Nohkhalikai Source: If you are familiar with Cherrapunji, then the Nokhalikhai falls must be a familiar name to come across. This waterfall stands listed as the tallest plunge waterfall in India, towering at 340mts. Gallons of fresh rainwater gushing down the viridescent hills, glittering under the eastern sun, paints a view adored by billions. What adds to the extraordinary allure of the place is the bright green and clear freshwater pool, formed at the foot of the waterfall. Earlier it almost seemed impossible to trace the waters to their source. But the Meghalaya government has blown the lid off impossible and made arrangements for an entire trek leading to the source of the mighty Nokhalikai. One has to take a walk down the East Khasi hills to come across an endless stretch of red granite boulders, which later provides a birds-eye view of Cherrapunji.
Krang-Suri falls: If there comes a list of the best swimming destinations in North-East India, Krang-Suri will top it. Located in the Jantia hills, it stands on the other side of the state. The journey consists of a 3-hour drive from Shillong along the lines of Jowai, followed by a minor walk down the mountain. Krang-Suri looks like series of glittering water threads effortlessly flowing down the rocks into a clear blue pool. For swimming, the tourism board provides proper safety gear, and to make things safer, the team has also appointed a team of qualified lifeguards for haywire situations.
Freshwater lagoons: Personally speaking, this is the closest that one can come to find a replacement for the Grand Canyon in India. A thirty minutes trek down the Nokhalikai falls, will lead you this an untouched piece of paradise. The view is one of a kind, red granite mountains sheltering tiny green lagoons, wrapped in a blanket of the eastern zephyr. A few hours near a granite mountain with the perfect music can be almost considered therapeutic.
