We decided to make the best use of Oct 2nd long weekend and planned a quick holiday to Shillong . We took a 3 hour direct morning flight from Mumbai to Guwahati . From Guwahati , Shillong is some 100 Km away . So hired a car directly from the airport and started our much awaited vacation . It took us around 4.5 hours ( including two breaks of 20 min each ) to reach beautiful Shillong .Shillong is so truly called the "Scotland of the East"Misty , foggy and everything that hill stations are made of !!!.
We stayed at a resort called " The Heritage Club-Tripura Castle" a hotel nestled atop a hill and spread over 9 acres of green, barely 5 minutes from the city yet secluded and serene. Apart from the location and the views , this hotel is one of the most recommended for the delicious food. So first night we just relaxed , enjoyed the views and ate sumptuous dinner !!!
We started our day early the next day as we were all set to explore Lake Dawki and Living Root Bridge on the day trip . Our hotel helped us hire a car for the entire day and we started our journey in the beautiful Meghalaya. It took us around 3.5 hours from Shillong to reach Dawki . But the view was worth it.Dawki is located on the border between India and Bangladesh. It is really hard to ignore the crystal clear water of the Umngot River of this town. Boat ride in this pristine river is a major tourist attraction
After Dawki , we headed to famous living root Bridge . It is a must visit site It is said that these bridges are some 100 years old, although no one knows there exact age. Trekking up to the bridge may be taxing but it is an experience in itself !
On day 3 we checked out of our hotel and headed on the day trip to Cherrapunjee . Cherrapunjee was once famous as the wettest destination in the world with the record of receiving the highest rainfall. Most of the waterfall were already dried in October first week. But the air was cool and crisp If one is interested in watching the waterfalls of Cherrapunjee in its full glory , then this destination should be visited during monsoon season ( july to sept).
From Cherrapunjee we drove straight to our resort "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake ". This is said to be one of the most serene and beautiful resort in entire north east and we realised why this is so.
Day 4th we did nothing except for soaking in the sun and the view of the Lake Umaim from the comfort of the beautiful resort. The resort has something for everyone . Ri Kynjai is designed with its orientation to the east - capturing the view of the lake and the rising sun - a sublime wake - up call for those who love to revel in the ‘spirit of the rising sun’. This was the best holiday ever !!!!
We left shillong with peace in heart and beautiful memories which I am sure will last for years to come . We took a direct flight back to Mumbai from Guwahati airport.
