This place is a typical tourist place with many options for food.
1. Kalimpong
Small place run by non Tibetan family yet they served best Tibetan food. They have very simple menu. They are famous for momos but apart from that do try mutton Shapta which is a boneless mutton dish close to chilli chicken. You can have it with steamed bread.
2. Bhagsu cake
Local famous cake but nothing like a cake. It’s like a biscuit with chocolate layer but worth giving a try , kids would definitely like it.
3 Norbulingka institute
If you are thinking why institute is coming in a food list and whether I have made a mistake while typing then no I’m in my senses:). This is a Tibetan art and culture institute and they have a small restaurant where you get variety of in-house baked tarts. We tried lemon tart and walnut tart. They have lot of other things on menu like cakes, coffee, pasta etc. Overall it's a worth visiting place
4. Jimmy’s Italian kitchen
Our home stay owner Sushil ji insisted us to visit this place and I wasn’t very convinced. Italian food that too in Mcleodganj seriously?? But trust me don’t miss this place.Food is definitely good but more than that view that you get and ambiance is much better. You can enjoy the evening with glass or wine or ginger lemon tea (my favorite) while looking at valley.
5. Himachal food
I was more keen on trying local pahadi food which you’d not get in any restaurant. We were staying at Naddi ,few kms away from Mcleodganj and local restaurant owner arranged a pahadi meal for us on request. This food is bit different, it’s not spicy and has unique taste. They make chhole in yogurt based gravy. Rajam is grown locally so that’s another gravy commonly eaten. Mithe Chawal (sweetened rice) is famous sweet dish. I was told that best way to taste the local food is to attend a wedding. Infact our guide invited us to a wedding which was happening during our stay and unlike Maharashtrian weddings which are short and quick here wedding goes for weeks. However we were too shy tobe attend this wedding.
We didn't click any photos of the meal.
6.local wine
These are fruit based wines, famous one is made from Apricot. Okish in my view. It doesnt taste like wine more sweetish in taste but worth giving a try.
We did try lot many other places which were highly rated by food blogger’s but frankly they were more commercial and disappointing. It’s always best to ask local people for suggestions which most of the times would not disappoint you.
