A Mauritian Sundowner

Pictures speak a 100 words.And a video? Perhaps 1000x.Which is why I could not resist filming parts of this Mauritian sundowner at the Trou Aux Biches beach in northern Mauritius. Fifteen minutes south from the touristy Grand Baie area, Trou Aux Biches is way quieter, way more otherworldly.Otherworldly because this is one of the few beach destinations where I saw locals coming out in large numbers to profit from their own paradise - after sundown. Families, friends, children and even pets, swimming together, splashing and screaming playfully once the sun downed on them. What a spirit of bonhomie. Like a Brave New World was on its way....

Somewhere on a pier, a Mauritian guy plays ragga music and take pics of the sunset. He is able to appreciate with new eyes the beauty of his island, never growing immune to it, never taking it for granted. He stand at a place where he can see nothing but the ocean.

The sky and the sea at one point appear like orange and grey parallel lines. And then a maddening burst of color, where watermelon pink, orange and dark grays dominate.... then a woman floating on the sea in the failing light of dusk.

Have you deliberately steered clear of Mauritius on account of it being too touristy? Well think again. For this is what you're missing.

Tip:

Trou Aux Biches is accessible by TRIOLET local buses from capital Port Louis and La Grand Baie. There aren't as many street food options as you'd find at Grand Baie so either pack your own or stop at one of the resort cafes. Below is a map to get your bearings.
